PARC - Psychiatric Enrolled Nurse  – Prevention and Recovery Care

Permanent Full time Time, 80 hours/ fortnight (ADO included)

Up to $20,000 incentive payments may be available to support relocation
(Be reimbursed for rent, childcare, school fees, relocation costs and more). The Victorian Government has allocated funds to support rural and regional Area Mental Health Services (AMHS) to provide incentives to attract workers to roles that are difficult to fill.
The new workforce relocation and incentive grants program is being administered by Rural Agency Workforce Victoria (RWAV).

About Prevention and Recover Care (PARC)

The PARC is a 12-bed treatment facility that offers short to medium term rehabilitation to participants. It includes 6 beds for stays up to 28 days and 6 extended PARC beds for stays up to 6 months. This guideline outlines the process for admissions and discharges to and from the PARC.

The PARC has a recovery orientated framework. This encompasses principles of self-determination and personalised care. Recovery-oriented practice emphasis's hope, social inclusion, community participation, personal goal setting and self-management. This promotes a coaching or partnership relationship between people accessing mental health services and mental health professionals, whereby people with lived experience are considered experts on their lives and experiences while mental health professionals are considered experts on available treatment services.

About the role

We are seeking a Psychiatric Enrolled Nurse who will provide clinical treatments to clients within the inpatient mental health services and their carers that are evidence based and/or best practice, family inclusive to enhance the patient’s recovery from serious mental disorder.

Relevant knowledge on principle of recovery orientated care, trauma informed care and showcase a capacity to observe care via a holistic lenses.

Relevant knowledge and skills in risk assessment, mental state assessment, care planning and knowledge of acute mental and addiction nursing care and practice is essential to undertake this role. Knowledge of the Mental Health Act and other relevant legislation is required.

Well-developed interpersonal skills are required to effectively consult and with consumers, carers, family members, and other professionals.

The position requires a high performer who is customer focused, a team player, and is motivated and enthusiastic.

The position involves a rotating shift work roster.

Key Responsibilities

  • Compliance with all Grampians Health Service Policies and Procedures.
  • Under the guidance of a Registered Nurse, undertake bio-psychosocial assessments of families, and contribute to the formulation and treatment plans for people admitted to the PARC Unit.
  • This includes completing & documenting mental state assessments, risk assessments and risk reduction strategies, and treatment planning which is collaborative with the admitted part and treating team.
  • Ensure family, carers or significant others are engaged (where appropriate) throughout admission.
  • Practice in accordance with recovery principles respecting the uniqueness of individuals, their choices and focusing on their personal strengths.
  • Ensure people receiving service and significant others are provided with evidence-based information and education during their stay at the PARC Unit, including facilitating or co-facilitating group education under the guidance & supervision of a Registered Nurse.
  • Assist the Nurse Unit Manager & Associate Nurse Unit Managers and the members of the MDT in maintaining a psychotherapeutic environment.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe, secure and clean environment.
  • Practice in accordance with the values and goals of Grampians Health Services and the Perinatal Mental Health Teams.
  • Maintain affiliation with professional bodies and demonstrates recognition of own educational and professional development needs and acts independently to address those needs & requirements.
  • Establish and maintain effective and appropriate interagency relationships where appropriate and/or as directed. 
  • Participate in the development, implementation and review of policies and procedures and planning within the service, and identify and engage in quality improvement activities.
  • Proactively participates in line supervision with a line manager and completes all mandatory, organizational and department competencies and professional reviews.
  • Assists line manager in monitoring or responding to complaints or feedback, in accordance to Grampians Health Services procedures.

Skills and experience

  • Candidates are required to meet the position and qualification requirements as per Victorian Public Mental Health Services Enterprise Agreement 2020-2024.
  • Mandatory Qualifications: Professional qualifications in Nursing and a current Registration in accordance with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • Experience: Relevant experience in, and ongoing commitment to, the delivery of evidence-based and  best  practice,  family inclusive treatments  for  patients  with  a  mental health disorder.
  • Clinical Knowledge: Demonstrate an appropriate level of knowledge and understanding of contemporary evidence-based treatments and/or best practices, providing appropriate clinical responses within the multidisciplinary team context on a day-to-day basis.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Demonstrate effective communication, interpersonal and conflict resolution skills within the immediate work environment. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain positive and constructive relationships with patients, families, significant others, colleagues and other health service providers.
  • Administrative Skills: Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively, manage competing priorities and meet varied deadlines in timely manner. Ability to utilise computer-based programs for day-to-day duties.
  • Organisational Requirements: Actively participates in own Performance Development and Review program, participates as required in quality improvement activities; evidence of, and a commitment to, ongoing professional development and achievement of professional goals.
