About the role:

The Specialist Investigators Support Unit (SISU) established in early 2018, sits within Family Violence Command. The SISU provide specialised clinical services to proactively identify and address the psychological health and wellbeing needs of employees working in the themes of child abuse, sexual offending and family violence, including the Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Teams (SOCITs) and Family Violence Investigation Units (FVIUs). This is achieved through individual, team and organisational strategies and interventions.

These services are in addition to organisational wide wellbeing services in accordance with the recommendations of the Victoria Police Mental Health Review (2016) which made specific mention of the need for dedicated mental health and wellbeing supports for Victoria Police employees working in the crime themes of sexual offences, child abuse and family violence.

Your duties will include:

Delivery of individual, group and organisational interventions to support mental health and psychological wellbeing to Victoria Police employees working in the crime themes of sexual offending, child abuse and family violence. This includes:
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of best practice psychological services targeted to the specific needs of those working in these work areas.
  • Providing individual clinical services to employees working in these areas, including, triage, psychological and risk assessment, short term counselling/intervention, case management, wellbeing consultations and support and secondary consultation. This involves the provision of immediate and autonomous clinical judgment, problem solving and decision making in complex situations, including crisis response and critical incidents.
  • Provision of group interventions, including, facilitation of reflective practice and the development and delivery of training and education sessions.
  • Consultation and coaching of senior managers and operational supervisors around clinical and organisational psychology concerns associated with their teams. This includes the provision of specialist opinion regarding crisis situations, critical incidents and other issues affecting the mental health and psychological wellbeing of employees.
  • Building and managing collaborative relationships with assigned work units and other stakeholders within and external to Victoria Police.
  • Providing subject matter expertise to a range of projects, policies and programs within Family Violence Command and where appropriate across Victoria Police more broadly.
  • Participating in research and projects relevant to the mental health and psychological wellbeing of Victoria Police employees working in the themes of sexual offending, child abuse and family violence, and contributing to appropriate research initiatives within Victoria Police and the wider policing community.

As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • Possession of high level clinical expertise and demonstrated ability in the provision of clinical assessments, counselling, case management and the development of program initiatives.  
  • Possession of high level knowledge and demonstrated experience in the provision of critical incident interventions.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide immediate and autonomous clinical judgement and crisis intervention in highly stressful, complex and sensitive situations.
  • Proven sound theoretical and practical ability to develop and implement policies and service delivery plans, relevant to a small multi-disciplinary team in a large and diverse organisation.
  • Highly developed written, verbal communication and presentation skills (including group facilitation), with the ability to utilise these skills effectively to motivate and influence a broad range of audiences including senior management.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify emerging issues and trends impacting upon a large and diverse organisation, to initiate and develop appropriate research, analysis and evidenced based strategies and programs, in partnership with relevant stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to monitor client and stakeholder satisfaction, and constructively manage stakeholder issues to ensure positive outcomes for the stakeholder and the Region/Department/Command.
  • A proven record of ethical behaviour and a demonstrated commitment to the Victoria Police Code of Ethics and Conduct, Financial Code of Practice, and the Organisational Values.


Requirements and relevant information:

  • One (1) part time (0.4FTE), ongoing position available.
  • Salary range: $87,640 - $99,438 p.a. plus superannuation pro rata.
  • One (1) full time, fixed term until ending 18/3/2022 (parental leave backfill) position available.
  • The position will be based in the Docklands, at the Victoria Police Centre; however, involves travel around Victoria, including overnight stays on a regular basis.
  • Full registration as a Psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Registration number must be provided; or Registration as a Social Worker with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW). Proof of registration must be provided.
  • Applicants' must be an Australian Citizen, permanent resident, or hold a valid work permit or visa.
  • The successful candidate will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.
