    Apheresis

    Austin Campus- Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre

    Permanent Full-time and Part-time positions available- 40hrs/week

    The Apheresis unit consists of 4 treatment bays and 1 procedure room.

    The Unit provides nursing services and specialises in the following procedures: 

    • Apheresis procedures: Plasma exchange, Autologous & Allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell collection, Red Cell Exchange, Red Cell depletion, Granulocyte collection, LDL Apheresis, Donor Lymphocyte collections & White Cell depletion. The Apheresis unit is part of the Clinical Haematology Department at Austin Health. All services are provided to both inpatients and outpatients across Austin Health, Northern Health, Ballarat, Casey and Eastern Health.  As a member of the Australian bone marrow donor registry, we are accredited to collect allogeneic stem cells for centres internationally.    
    • Management of Peripherally inserted Central Catheters (PICC) for Austin Health’s inpatients & outpatients.   
    • Administration of blood products and intravenous immunoglobulins on an as needed basis when day oncology is above capacity.  
    • Managing patients presenting for Peripheral Stem Cell Transplant within the ambulatory setting.  

    The apheresis unit is co-located to the Day Oncology Unit - a 21 chair unit and 3 car at home service that provides cancer therapeutics to patients within the ambulatory and home settings. Nurses with a cancer nursing background who wish to maintain a chemotherapy administration skill set can rotate into the day oncology unit on an annual basis. 

    Nursing care is provided with the support of a collaborative multidisciplinary team, including specialist medical, pharmacy, allied health staff and administrative staff. Referrals to allied healthcare workers, such as dieticians, pastoral care, occupational health and physiotherapists, also helps the team to deliver the best and most comprehensive care.

    As an Austin Health Nurse you will be responsible for ensuring the delivery of evidence-based nursing care in designated medical specialties, in order to optimize health outcomes for the community.
