Registered Nurses, with at least 12 months acute care experience following their graduate year, are invited to apply for the CANCER NURSING DISCOVERY PROGRAM at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.



  • Advance your acute nursing career and develop knowledge & expertise in a variety of cancers & treatment types.

  • Focus on on-going care of cancer patients - newly diagnosed, mid and post treatment, in survivorship care or palliative care utilising state-of-the-art equipment and facilities.

  • 12 or 18 Month program, with ongoing employment offered on successful completion.

  • Up to three rotations in Peter Mac’s Haematology Ward, Medical Oncology Ward and Chemo Day Unit.

  • The Second intake for Peter Mac Oncology Discovery Program 2022 will commence on October 2022


The PMCC Cancer Nursing Discovery Program provides an avenue for Registered Nurses with an interest in oncology nursing to transition their practice to the acute care oncology setting.


Clinical Rotations


Medical Oncology: a 32 bed ward with a clinical focus on people who have been diagnosed with cancers involving their bone and soft tissues, lungs, gastrointestinal systems, skin, urological systems, gynaecological systems, head & neck and brain. Treatment modalities provided to patients include chemotherapy, external beam radiotherapy, nuclear medicine treatments and palliative care.


Haematology: a 32 bed ward providing treatment and care for patients with haematological cancers including myelodysplastic syndromes, myeloproliferative disorders, aplastic anaemia, Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, multiple myeloma and plasma cell disorders.


Day Therapy: the Day Therapy Unit provides patient care under a shared service model with Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Royal Women’s Hospital. The service comprises of 85 chairs across five areas: (1) Chemotherapy Day Unit (2) Medical Day Unit (3) Transfusion Lounge (4) Apheresis Service (5) Clinical Trials Unit.


Education & Support


Peter Mac’s Academic Nursing Unit (ANU) have developed a targeted set of objectives and an educational program to support the Discovery Program for participants. These include the following study days: Introduction to Cancer, Chemotherapy Module 1, Cancer Care Emergencies and Haematology Malignancies.


To help you achieve your goals we will provide you with an additional four (4) study days (above the Award entitlement) throughout the 18 month Discovery Program.


Eligibility Criteria


Division 1 Registered Nurses with at least 12 months acute care experience following their graduate year (YP4 and above) and be available at least 6 days per fortnight.  You will be required to work a 24 hour, 7 day a week rotating roster while in the inpatient areas.
