An exciting opportunity currently exists for an enthusiastic and highly experienced registered nurse to join our cardiology, cardiac and thoracic surgery team.


Details of Department


Ward 5 East is a dynamic 30-bed unit specialising in cardiac and thoracic surgery and cardiology medicine. It contains a 12 bed High Dependency Unit caring for cardiac medical and surgical patients and thoracic surgery patients and has telemetry monitoring facilities for eighteen beds.


The unit is committed to patient-centred, evidence-based care and is dedicated to continuing professional development for all staff.


Details of position/position requirements


To deliver a customer focussed service to patients, their families and visitors.  The role involves being a member of the team of 5 East and reflect the values of the unit and Austin Health in general.


This is demonstrated by being responsible for the day-to-day provision of patient care which is efficient, effective and cost effective and which meets organisational, professional and nursing standards within a framework of patient focused care:



  • To maintain a high standard of nursing care.

  • To manage unit resources efficiently and effectively.

  • To maintain and increase skill, knowledge and competencies required, fulfilling the role in line with current nursing knowledge and research. 

  • To actively promote & undertake self-development and learning. 

  • To assist in the development of standards and ensure they meet professional, organisational, legal and ethical requirements. 

  • To accurately document, observe and report relevant nursing findings, within the framework of the nursing process.

  • To contribute to an environment of multidisciplinary teamwork and maintain a flexible approach.


To be successful in this role you must demonstrate/Key responsibilities will include:


Essential for Performance in the Position   



  • Current registration with the Nurses Board of Victoria.

  • Experience in cardiac and thoracic nursing, Post-Graduate Critical Care or equivalent certificate highly preferred.

  • Critical thinking skills and the ability to work autonomously.

  • Open, flexible and innovative.

  • Commitment to nursing as a profession.

  • Commitment to patient focused care.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal form.

  • Commitment to further self-development and education.

  • Demonstrated interest in cardiac care and thoracic nursing.

  • Knowledge of legal and ethical responsibilities.

  • Demonstrated ability to work within a multidisciplinary team.
