We provide a range of emergency, surgical, medical and general healthcare services, including maternity, palliative care, mental health, drug and alcohol, residential care, community health and state-wide specialist services to people and communities that are diverse in culture, age, socio-economic status, population and healthcare needs.

About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Research Assistant to join our Clinical and Social Research Team at Turning Point, Australia’s leading national addiction treatment, training and research centre. Our Clinical and Social Research program aims to address addiction issues across the spectrum of harm, establishing effective methods for supporting client journeys from initial help-seeking through to specialist treatment and recovery.

The successful candidate will work as part of this dynamic, collaborative team to conduct a range of activities leading to the timely completion of research projects. This includes clinical trials testing novel psychological interventions to help people reduce and/or cease harmful substance use (e.g. the Health4Her project, to increase awareness of the alcohol-breast cancer link and address harmful drinking among women attending breast screening services), and ground-breaking qualitative and program implementation research (e.g. understanding experiences of a new Driver Support Service offered to people in Victoria detected drink/drug driving). The successful candidate will contribute to other research activities undertaken by the team. The successful candidate will work directly with senior researchers/clinicians who will provide guidance, mentoring and training to assist them in performing their role, and ongoing training and professional development opportunities will be available.

About you

To be successful in this role you will possess

  • A strong interest in working in alcohol and other drug (AOD) research and/or previous experience working with people with complex needs (e.g., AOD, mental health)
  • Clinical and/or qualitative research skills
  • High level of attention to detail, including accurate scheduling, data collection and record keeping
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated capacity to adhere to ethical guidelines and project protocols
  • Analytic skills, and an ability to use initiative and exercise sound judgement
  • Computing skills, including proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office programs, statistical analysis software packages (e.g. SPSS, Stata), and the Endnote referencing system
