RMH- MHS and WH MH&WS-Acute Health Registered Nurse to Mental Health Nursing Transition Program

  • Seeking experienced acute, sub- acute and aged person’s registered nurses who are interested in moving into mental health nursing across our Adult, Older Person’s and Youth Mental Health Services
  • Full time/Part Time fixed term positions available

The registered nurse (RN) to mental health transition program is a great place to commence your mental health nursing career. As part of the Royal Commission and Reform Victoria, Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) and Western Health (WH) Mental Health Services have had considerable growth in programs including expansion of acute mental health clinical settings through the opening of state-of-the-art purpose-built modern inpatient facilities.

The RN transition to mental health program, delivered by Royal Melbourne Hospital, Mental Health Service and our partner, Western Mental Health and Wellbeing Service is an integral part of our commitment to develop the future nursing workforce. We are recruiting experienced and enthusiastic registered nurses from acute, sub-acute or aged care. If you are passionate about mental health and a desire to specialise in this exciting field to provide compassionate and responsive mental health care we welcome your application to join our teams.

Recently qualified RN’s who have experience in mental health nursing as an enrolled nurse are also eligible to apply.

The structured program supports the early career nurse in building and developing their mental health nursing knowledge, skills and offers a pathway for the nurse to obtain their post graduate mental health nursing qualification. As a RN transition to Mental Health at RMH MHS and WH MH&WS you will experience diverse, well rounded clinical experience. Clinical allocations take place in a variety of settings, across the lifespan and opportunities exist across the breadth of the clinical services.


Your New Role

  • If you are passionate and interested in joining a program that offers high quality evidence-based pathways for emerging mental health nurses then come and hone your skills with likeminded transition registered nurses.
  • Participate in a structured and tailored mental health nurse education program facilitated by RMH - MHS; on successful completion of the RMH MHS facilitated component be supported as you  undertake post graduate diploma of mental health nursing 
  • Provide high quality standards of consumer care; includes assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation for care in collaboration within multidisciplinary team
  • Maintain an understanding of individual responsibility for consumer safety, quality and risk.
  • Participate in continuing education sessions, committees, special projects and relevant professional groups.
  • Promote a friendly, respectful and supportive environment within the department and organisation.
  • Engage in structured learning programs as you work towards becoming a specialist mental health nurse. 

About You

  • Experience working as a registered nurse in acute health, sub-acute or aged care or a qualified RN with mental health experience as an enrolled nurse
  • Motivated to transition to mental health nursing and complete the academic program.
  • Enthusiastic and motivated to develop skills and knowledge as a mental health nurse including mental health practice – risk assessment, mental state assessment and care planning; recovery-oriented approaches and relevant legislation as it applies to mental health care
  • Understand the professional, ethical, legal responsibilities of Registered Nurses
  • Understand the importance of compassionate nursing care which focuses on the best possible consumer outcomes.
  • Effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • The ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • A current Victorian Driver’s License,
