Austin Pathology provides services to Austin Health, Mercy Hospital for Women as well as Kyneton, Kilmore, Seymore and Castlemaine District Health Services, numerous GPS and Specialists. Austin Pathology is committed to the provision of high quality, comprehensive, evidence based pathology services in a timely, cost effective and ethical manner to meet the needs of our clients.


The Austin Pathology Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory is seeking a full-time permanent Medical Scientist Grade 3.



To be considered for this role you will need to possess at least a BSc or equivalent in a relevant area of Genetics or Molecular Biology. Hands-on experience as a medical scientist in a NATA accredited Diagnostics Molecular Pathology/Genetics laboratory including NATA accreditation of new assays is essential. It is expected that the successful candidate will also be highly experienced with real-time and coventional PCR, DNA sequencing in particular next generation sequencing, variant curation, data analysis and the preparation of clinically focused reports.


Expert knowledge of emerging technologies for genome-based analysis, experience in droplet digital PCR, pyrosequencing and DNA fragment analysis by capillary electrophoresis as well as a PhD or Masters degree relevant to molecular haematology or solid tumour pathology is desirable.



Role specific:



  • Perform routine molecular assays (wet lab work) for Molecular Haematology and Solid Tumour Molecular Pathology according to laboratory procedures.

  • Analyze, curate and prepare reports for NGS-based assays for molecular haematology and solid tumour malignancies

  • Active discussion with Supervising Pathologist/Senior Scientist about the diagnostic test results and interpretation

  • To issue laboratory reports in a timely manner (maintaining turnaround times) according to laboratory procedure

  • Demonstrate analytical problem solving and corrective action skills

  • Provision of advice on appropriate Molecular Diagnostics tests and interpretation of results.

  • Validate new molecular assays using emerging technologies as droplet digital PCR, pyrosequencing, next generation DNA sequencing (NGS) and DNA fragment analysis by capillary electrophoresis.

  • Participate in development of new bioinformatics and curation services

  • Prepare validation and training documents for NATA accreditation of newly established assays

  • To participate in the internal quality control and external quality assurance activities of the Molecular Diagnostic Service

  • To participate in the maintenance of the laboratory and equipment (equipment calibration, preventative maintenance and safety protocols, monitoring of laboratory environment).

  • Maintain and update scientific/technical knowledge and skills by attendance at relevant seminars, lectures and conferences and monitor relevant scientific literature.

  • Training and education of scientific and technical staff

  • Initiate and participate in relevant approved research and development projects.
