POSITION SUMMARY:

Senior Drugs and Poisons Officer

The Senior Drugs and Poisons Officer is critical to the daily operations of the Safer Prescribing Team. This position will support the assessment of complex Schedule 8 permit applications, notifications and warrants. The position will also assess Voluntary Assisted Dying permit applications and prepare recommendation briefs for the Secretary. The Senior Drugs and Poisons Officer will provide advice, guidance and information to prescribers and pharmacists seeking to understand their legal obligations regarding Schedule 8 permits and SafeScript. The role also has an educative lens in promoting safer prescribing of drugs of dependence through research, analysis and evaluation of trends and risks of drugs of dependence as well as promoting the appropriate use of and response to SafeScript. In addition, this position will be providing project and policy support related to Drugs, Poisons and Controlled Substances legislation, Voluntary Assisted Dying and SafeScript. The Senior Drugs and Poisons Officer will be working very closely with other members of the team as well as the branch to support the objectives and outcomes of Medicines and Poisons Regulation.

Medicines and Poisons Regulation and Safer Prescribing Team

Medicines and Poisons Regulation branch is within the Regulatory, Risk, Integrity and Legal division. It provides technical and regulatory advice on all aspects of controlled drugs, poisons and therapeutic goods for industrial, educational, research, veterinary and human treatment purposes, including Chinese medicine. It conducts inspections and issues permits and licences for the manufacture, supply and use of drugs and poisons. It is also responsible for monitoring compliance with legislative requirements and prosecuting breaches under the Drugs, Poisons and Controlled Substances Act 1981.

The Safer Prescribing Team takes the lead for enabling medical and nurse practitioners to safely prescribe drugs of dependence. It does this through education, Schedule 8 permit assessment and provision of legislative and policy guidance to health practitioners. This team plays a key role in the operationalisation of SafeScript as well as Voluntary Assisted Dying permits.
