The Team

The position of Senior Environmental Assessment Officer, Petroleum forms a part of the Resources Branch within the Forestry, Resources and Climate Change Group.

The Resources Branch develops policy, programs and regulation to enable investment and generate jobs through the sustainable development of the State's earth resources, including extractives, minerals and petroleum.

The Role

The Senior Environmental Assessment Officer, Petroleum assesses applications for onshore and offshore petroleum exploration and production activities, including providing technical, regulatory and operational advice and recommending proposed outcomes for petroleum operation plans. The position works closely with the regulator's Technical Services, Rehabilitation Liability Assessments, Licencing and Compliance teams and other agencies, such as the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, the Environment Protection Authority, local councils, catchment and water authorities, and Heritage Victoria to assess petroleum applications.

Key Accountabilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Assess applications to undertake onshore and offshore petroleum activities in line with relevant legislation and client service standards:
    • Petroleum Act 1998
    • Offshore Petroleum and Greenhouse Gas Storage Act 2010
    • Greenhouse Gas Geological Sequestration Act 2008
    • Geothermal Energy Resources Act 2005
  • Work collaboratively and proactively with the regulator's Regulatory Compliance, Technical Services Licencing teams, co-regulators and other stakeholders to inform the assessment of proposed petroleum activities, including conducting on-site visits with applicants.
  • Provide advice to the Rehabilitation Liability Assessments and Bonds team on technical matters to inform the assessment of rehabilitation liabilities and bonds.
