About the role

The primary functions of the Fingerprint Sciences Group are the recovery and identification of fingerprint evidence from casework, and the maintenance of fingerprint records on the national database. 

The Fingerprint Sciences Group (FSG) provides a range of services which include:

  • Crime scene and exhibit examinations
  • Processing evidence from crime scenes
  • Processing and management of ten print fingerprint records
  • Forensic intelligence and support to frontline members
  • Provide factual and Expert opinion evidence in Courts of Law

This is a fingerprint expert role within the FSG, which is part of the Biometric Services Division at the Forensic Services Department (FSD). The FSG provides a state-wide fingerprint service from crime scene attendance through to court reporting. The fingerprint expert is required to undertake casework related activities independently and initiate and contribute to activities aligned to the broader FSD strategic vision and strong business improvement culture.

Your duties will include:

  • Independently perform professional fingerprint work at an advanced level, including undertaking non routine casework assignments and defining the appropriate methodology in the analysis of casework. Exercise a high level of independent judgement and skill which impacts on the Division, law enforcement and the courts.
  • Examine crime scenes for development and recovery of latent fingerprints and attend disaster scenes/mortuary to fingerprint unidentified bodies.
  • Prepare and present expert evidence in courts of law.
  • Operate the National Automated Fingerprint Information System (NAFIS) and other office and laboratory equipment as required.
  • Classify, search, identify and file fingerprint sets and latent fingerprints.
  • Assist in the development of policy and the identification, development and implementation of new or improved procedures and protocols.
  • Convey specialist concepts and knowledge to a wide range of clients, staff and stakeholders including participating on Victoria Police committees and groups.
  • Undertake technical and administrative reviews of casework.
  • Formulate, supervise, mentor and coach professional development programs for less experienced colleagues.
  • Supervise and/or engage in innovation and research projects.
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of fingerprint techniques, methods and procedures

As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • Proficiency and experience in fingerprint techniques and practices within diverse environments.
  • Highly developed communication skills with the ability to prepare reports and provide authoritative advice on complex cases, including in the Court context.
  • High level ability to lead, mentor, coach and develop staff within a team environment.
  • Demonstrated record of innovation and research leading to improvements in crime scene policy, practices and protocols.
  • Ability to convey specialist concepts and knowledge to a wide range of personnel, within operational areas of Victoria Police, as well as individuals, other police organisations, the judicial system and external bodies.
  • Proven ability to monitor client and stakeholder satisfaction, and constructively manage stakeholder issuesto ensure positive outcomes for the stakeholder and the Department.

Requirements and relevant information:

  • Recognised Fingerprint Expert Qualification.
  • Australasian Forensic Field Sciences Accreditation Board (AFFSAB) Certificate of Expertise.
  • Position will be located at 31 Forensic Drive Macleod 3085
  • Commencing salary will be at base level of salary range.
  • The successful candidate will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.
  • The successful candidate will be required to provide a DNA sample (buccal swab) for use in laboratory quality control procedures (elimination purposes only)
