Opportunity for an experienced Criminal Lawyer to join our Ballarat team, delivering legal aid services across the Central Highlands Region.

  • Part time (0.8FTE) maximum term position up to 6 months

  • Salary commensurate with experience, range: $91,334 - $114,165 (pro rata) plus superannuation

About the role:
In this role you will act as an advocate, providing high-quality legal services, casework, duty lawyering, and advice to clients primarily in criminal law matters across the Central Highlands region. As a Senior Lawyer you will also work on more complex matters and help to supervise, train and mentor less experienced Lawyers in the team.

You will assist with the development and implementation of policies and strategies regarding the delivery of legal aid services, and contribute to other VLA and community legal education projects as required.

About you:
You are a highly motivated Lawyer with substantial knowledge and/or experience in criminal law matters. You have a demonstrated ability to work effectively as an advocate and undertake casework in complex matters and are able to give sound strategic advice on legal and policy issues, demonstrating an understanding of the role that external organisations play in the delivery of legal aid services.

Essential to your success in the role are your high-level interpersonal skills and ability to communicate and negotiate successfully with a broad range of stakeholders, including clients, team members, and external colleagues.
