A fantastic opportunity exists for a legal practitioner to provide strategic, risk-based legal advice to Service Victoria as part of a high performing team in the Department of Premier and Cabinet's Office of the General Counsel.

The Office of the General Counsel within the Department of Premier and Cabinet provides strategic legal and policy advice to the Premier, other Ministers and the broader department. We deliver legal policy reforms from the centre of government, partnering with our key stakeholders to deliver tailored solutions to achieve common goals.

Service Victoria is an Administrative Office which is charged with simplifying, improving and modernising essential government transactions and delivering customer service.

As the Senior Legal Adviser, you will deliver and facilitate the provision of strategic and high quality legal advice to Service Victoria on a range of significant legal issues, including the operation of the Service Victoria Act 2018, the scope of Service Victoria's functions and powers, the application of privacy laws, and contractual and procurement issues.

You will develop close and effective relationships with Service Victoria, the Office of the General Counsel, as well as other branches, Departments and agencies, to facilitate the consistent implementation of Service Victoria's functions and operations across the whole of Victorian Government, and streamline and digitise business licencing in partnership with local government, making it easier to establish and do business in Victoria.

This is a 12 month fixed-term opportunity, based at 1 Treasury Place, Melbourne. However, the successful candidate will also be required to work part of the week at the Service Victoria office at 1 McNab Avenue, Footscray.

About you

Candidates must be admitted to practice and be eligible to hold a Victorian practising certificate.

In addition, as our ideal candidate, you will have:

  • significant experience in providing technically excellent, strategically-focused and practical legal advice on complex legal issues, including experience advising on privacy, administrative, local government and/or public law matters
  • outstanding written and oral communication skills
  • excellent relationship management and negotiation skills and a strong commitment to service excellence and assisting clients and stakeholders achieve their organisation's objectives
  • the ability to independently and effectively manage competing priorities and deliver results based on incomplete or ambiguous information and under time pressure
  • the ability to identify, manage and, where appropriate, escalate risks.
