About the branch

The People Safety & Risk Division provides advice and support for legal, statutory compliance, governance, audit and risk functions for Parks Victoria. It provides the tools and frameworks to ensure efficient and effective governance processes, including a risk management framework that can assist management to make informed decisions within an acceptable risk profile.

About the role and your responsibilities:  

As the Senior Legal Counsel, your primary focus is to manage the legal risk of the organisation. You will work closely and proactively partner with the Parks Victoria divisions to provide strategic legal advice. The position provides a wide range of legal services either directly or by engaging external law firms as appropriate.

In this role you will also contribute to the development of standardised advice, information and documents to align with contemporary laws, requirements and practices, as well as review and prepare new leases, licences, consents, permits and related documents. You will instruct external lawyers on the preparation of commercial agreements and negotiate new agreements, and assist with enhancing the capabilities and competencies of Parks Victoria employees to manage the organisation's legal risk including the provision of training on legal matters and governance issues as required.

To be successful for this role you will need:

  • A tertiary qualification in law is essential as well as having been admitted to practice law in Victoria.
  • Extensive post admission experience is highly desirable.
  • An exposure as in-house legal counsel to the following areas is highly desirable: general contracting, leasing, construction law and statutory interpretation.
  • Demonstrated high-level judgement as well as experience in analytical problem solving and providing support for decision making.
