About the role:

The Victorian State Government has established the Yoorrook Justice Commission, Australia's first truth-telling process into injustices experienced by First Peoples in Victoria. The Commission has been tasked with investigating both the contemporary and historical injustices experienced by Traditional Owners and First Peoples in Victoria in all areas of life since colonisation.  As a result of the establishment of the Yoorrook Justice Commission, a Senior Police Lawyer position has been established. Your portfolio of work will include assessing materials which are responsive to Notices to Produce issued by the Commission, and potentially supporting witnesses called to give evidence at hearings. The team is managed by the Principal Managing Lawyer, Yoorrook Justice Commission response.

Your duties will include:

The Senior Police Lawyer will be part of a team of in-house lawyers supporting Victoria Police's response to the Yoorrook Justice Commission. Their duties will include:

  • Case management of legal functions in response to the Commission including:
    • Responding to notices to produce and/or attend
    • Preparing witness statements
    • Briefing witnesses and providing support at hearings
    • Monitoring Commission proceedings for legal issues and risks
    • Preparing legal briefings and advice.
  • Managing and supervising junior lawyers and legal support staff, including by providing legal supervision as required to Police Lawyers under the Legal Profession Uniform Law and supporting their professional development
  • Preparing advice on legal, policy and compliance issues for the royal commission response
  • Supporting the development of legal reference materials and guidance to facilitate Victoria Police's response to the Commission
  • Liaising with and providing legal support to internal stakeholders

Liaising with external legal representatives to facilitate Victoria Police's Commission response, as required.

As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • Legal practice experience relevant to a royal commission response
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills for the provision of legal advice and to facilitate liaison with internal stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coordinate and motivate as a senior member or leader of a team
  • Sound understanding and application of the professionalism, ethics and integrity required to manage high risk matters having regard to the State of Victoria's obligations as a model litigant and the integrity and reputation of Victoria Police
  • Admission to practice as an Australian Lawyer and possess or be eligible to hold a current Australian Practising Certificate which authorises the holder to supervise legal practice by others (unrestricted).

Requirements and relevant information:

  • One (1) x full time fixed term position available until 30/06/2024
  • Position location is Victoria Police Centre, 311 Spencer Street, Docklands.
  • Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa.
  • The successful candidate will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.
  • In accordance with the Acting Chief Health Officer's Direction – COVID-19 Mandatory Vaccination (Workers) Directions, you are required to be fully vaccinated (this includes the booster vaccination) and your employment with Victoria Police is subject to proof of vaccination.
  • As a member of the Legal Services Department you will be located, on selection, at a specific office within a Division for a particular advertised opportunity.  However, given occasional legal service demand issues you may be required at times to undertake varied work within the Department.  This supports the Departments commitment to a flexible and deployable legal workforce and professional development opportunities in a range of legal domains.
