Senior Principal Geotechnical Enginner
The Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action employs more than 4,800 staff in 91 locations across the state and is a key manager of Victoria's public estate. DEECA directly manages $8 billion of assets, mostly comprising various categories of public land and a further $1.8 billion of other assets, including roads and tracks, office buildings, depots, recreational facilities, firefighting and road maintenance equipment, crossings, water bores and mobile plant. DEECA brings together Victoria's climate change, biodiversity protection, resources, water, energy, land management, agriculture, forest, and fire management functions. The Resources Branch develops policy, programs, and regulation to enable investment and generate jobs through the sustainable development of the State's earth resources, including extractives, minerals, and petroleum.
Reporting to the Assistant Director, Technical Services, the Senior Principal Geotechnical Engineer provides authoritative risk-based geotechnical advice on geotechnical stability of mines, quarries, and other earth resources sites during all stages of the resource project life cycle, including design, operation, rehabilitation and closure. A key component of the position is ensuring that robust tailings and slimes management; stability control systems and standards are implemented and that the Earth Resources sector has the knowledge to properly manage tailings/slimes and slope stability related risks. Additionally, you will prepare and deliver educational information on the requirements for assessing and specifying geotechnical risks and controls for Earth Resources Regulation Officers, industry operators and other agencies. This includes key interactions with internal and external stakeholders including industry bodies, coregulators and community groups to inform the preparation and delivery of the petroleum work program.
As an experienced mining geotechnical expert with experience in mining, ideally with experience in an open pit mine/quarry environment, you will have experience working in the design, development, operation and rehabilitation and closure stages of large open cut operations. Experience with the design, construction, management and closure of tailings dams is essential. You will also have experience in developing and implementing fit-for-purpose geotechnical standards, operational strategies, risk frameworks, policies, procedures, and practices, preferably in a regulated environment. This will include experience working with frameworks, standards, systems, processes, and controls used to manage mine and quarry geotechnical risks. Being highly regarded for your strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with proven track record in developing and implementing geotechnical related strategies and actions, you are able to engage a diverse range of stakeholders to build effective working relationships and achieve positive outcomes.
Tertiary qualifications in geotechnical engineering (mining), engineering geology or dam/tailings engineering are required.
