About the Business Unit:

The Melbourne Assessment Prison (MAP) is a maximum-security correctional facility located on the fringe of the Melbourne CBD.  The Prison is the State's main reception prison, receiving prisoners directly from the Courts and Police and provides assessment and orientation services for all male prisoners received into the prison system.

About the Role:

Senior Prison Officers take a lead role within custodial teams, coaching, mentoring and supporting prison officers. A senior prison officers' role encompasses a range of teamwork, case management, custodial and security responsibilities.

Some of your duties will include:

  • Coordinating the day-to-day operations of a team of Prison Officers
  • Working with all members of the prison to ensure the safety and security of prisoners, staff and visitors.  This includes maintenance of the integrity of both the external and internal security of the facility, appropriate levels of surveillance and interaction within the facility, and ensuring compliance with security and safety procedures
  • Managing a case load of offenders, including more difficult and complex offenders, in accordance with the requirements of offender management practices, liaising with the various Clinical, Vocational, Personal Development and Reintegration Service staff, to meet the identified needs of offenders.

About You:

As our ideal candidate, you will possess:

  • The ability to plan and prioritise work of self and others and understanding alternate views and circumstances in order to address personal preference or bias and select the most effective method to ensure targets are achieved within local or organisational guidelines
  • The ability to develop operational responses to recurring issues based on knowledge, expertise, and an accurate appraisal of facts
  • A willingness to acknowledge concerns of others, modifying approaches to the situation and demonstrating a considerate attitude, while moving individuals past their emotional responses towards a common understanding and solutions focus, firmly and confidently.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership in a correctional environment.

Qualifications

  • Completion of the Prison Officer Pre-service training essential.
