About us

The Children's Court of Victoria (ChCV) has jurisdiction under the Children, Youth and Families Act 2005 to hear cases involving children and young people up to the age of 18 years, and in some cases up to 19 years. It has a Family Division and a Criminal Division and it sits at locations throughout metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria.

The Children's Court Clinic (Clinic) is a state-wide, independent service that conducts assessments for the Family and Criminal Divisions of the ChCV that involve children, adolescents and their families.

The Clinic comprises a dynamic, supportive, highly skilled team of clinicians who assess a variety of clinical, neuropsychological and forensic presentations before the court.

Child maltreatment, adult and youth mental illness, complex trauma, substance abuse, personality difficulties, family violence and other adult and youth problem behaviours, in addition to intellectual disability, developmental delay and difficult family dynamics are typical features in cases referred to the Clinic.

The Clinic also provides ongoing professional development and supervision of staff, in addition to opportunities to be involved in the supervision of Doctoral psychology students undergoing placements at the Clinic, and the possibility of providing treatment interventions for a small number of cases.

About the role

This VPS-6 Senior Psychologist role involves the provision of independent clinical assessments for magistrates predominantly in Family Division matters in the ChCV.

Such assessments typically involve interviewing children, adolescents and parents presenting with a myriad of clinical issues, including trauma, ruptures in attachment, mental illness, substance use and parenting difficulties leading to safety concerns pertaining to vulnerable children.

Please note that the Children's Court Clinic will be running an information webinar on Tuesday 9th August where further information will be provided regarding how the Clinic functions, the role of clinicians, and how the Clinic interacts with Court processes. We strongly encourage anyone interested to register your interest to attend this event (please see the attached flyer).
