About the Role

The Senior Safety Quality Investigator sits within Safety, Wellbeing and Compliance, a branch of the People and Workplace Services in the Department of Justice and Community Safety (the department). The Safety, Wellbeing and Compliance branch provides process, systems and services to support the department to meet its responsibilities under Health and Safety Laws (Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004, Dangerous Goods Act 1985 and Workplace Injury Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2013).

The Senior Safety Quality Investigator is responsible for the development, implementation and monitoring of a consistent and rigorous safety investigation methodology to build departmental safety investigation capability to ensure investigations identify root causes and have appropriate risk controls identified. The Senior Safety Quality Investigator will take the lead in coaching, mentoring and guiding managers and Health and Safety Representatives in the best practice incident investigation techniques and processes. The Senior Safety Quality Investigator may lead and/or oversee the process of investigations undertaken into reportable and notifiable incidents and complex/high risk incidents.

The role is based in Melbourne CBD with the expectation of working in metropolitan and country locations as required to provide appropriate mentoring and support to line managers to ensure quality investigations are undertaken.

About You

As our ideal candidate, you will possess:

  • Demonstrated experience in undertaking investigation activities within a regulatory or government setting
  • Demonstrated experience using investigation methodologies (for example, Incident Cause Analysis Methods (ICAM), Fig Tree, Root Cause Analysis (RCA), AcciMap)
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting records of interview, interview witnesses and obtain statements of evidence
  • Demonstrated experience in the undertaking incident investigation processes leading to identification and remedy of the contributing factors and root cause(s)
  • A strong ability to identify issues in common for one or more clients or stakeholders and use them to build mutually beneficial partnerships. 
  • A strong ability to identify and respond to a stakeholder's underlying needs uses understanding of the stakeholder's organisational context to ensure outcomes are achieved
  • A strong ability to develop and apply frameworks to develop capability at an organisational level, as well as clearly defining role expectations, monitoring performance, providing timely and constructive feedback and facilitating employee development. 
  • Qualifications in either a Certificate IV in Government (Investigations) or a Diploma of Government (Investigations) is desirable.

We are looking for someone with a strong understanding of standards and experience with investigations. The successful candidate will identify risks and make recommendations following complex workplace incidents.
