The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking a Strategy and Policy Lead to provide a critical role within the Koori Justice Unit

This is an Aboriginal Prioritised position, a role for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples, who will be given priority consideration as per the special measures provision of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010.

 

About the Business Unit

The Koori Justice Unit (KJU) is a unit within the Aboriginal Justice Group of the Department of Justice and Community Safety (DJCS), which has been established to help realise a clear vision of a fair and accessible justice system for Aboriginal people.

The KJU is responsible for coordinating the implementation of the Victorian Aboriginal Justice Agreement - Burra Lotjpa Dunguludja - currently in its fourth phase (AJA4), in partnership with the Aboriginal community and Victorian government, in line with realising Aboriginal self-determination.

About the Role

Reporting into the Senior Manager, Strategy, Governance and Coordination, The Strategy and Policy Lead will provide policy advice to support the implementation and monitoring of the AJA. This role will have primary responsibility for the coordination of policy and work closely internally with other business units within the Aboriginal Justice group to support the contribution to whole of government policy frameworks in Aboriginal Affairs as well contributing to policy advice.

Some of your duties will include:

  • Work with and support a small team, including staff supervision, performance and development planning (PDP) and building knowledge and capability in order to deliver high-level policy advice and engagement to support the implementation and monitoring of critical outcomes for AJA
  • Provide support to DJCS's contribution to whole of government frameworks in Aboriginal Affairs as well as provide advice to support the Indigenous reform agenda of the national Standing Committee on Law and Justice (SCLJ) and the Closing the Gap reforms of COAG.
  • Working closely with the Aboriginal Justice Policy Reform Unit, support the development of future iterations of the Aboriginal Justice Agreement and other reforms driven by the Aboriginal Justice Caucus.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Aboriginal community, both society and culture and the issues impacting on it.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with the Victorian Aboriginal community.
  • Demonstrated experience in advocacy and delivering policy and legislative reform through community consultation and targeted engagement.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of policy development and implementation.

Qualifications

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in law, public policy, Aboriginal affairs or similar is desired
