Sheriff's Officer - Expression of Interest

To keep up-to-date with our latest campaigns, complete and submit this expression of interest form. You'll still need to apply when sheriff's officer roles come up, but joining our talent pool means you'll be the first to know about upcoming vacancies!

Taking action to build a fairer community

Sheriff's officers are responsible for enforcing warrants and orders issued by the courts, making members of the public accountable for unpaid fines and contributing to a safer Victoria.

They have the power to demand and collect payments, apply a wheel clamp to a vehicle, seize and remove property for the purpose of sale, and arrest a person named in a warrant.

As a sheriff's officer, on any day you could be working with:

  • someone with years of unpaid traffic fines to get them resolved
  • a company to collect money they owe resulting from a VCAT hearing
  • a homeowner who has ignored requests from their bank to bring their mortgage payments up to date.
  • someone who has failed to appear in court as required.

Every day is different, with new challenges and experiences. Most of the work is outdoors, with a combination of early and late shifts.

This is also one of the best jobs around for work-life balance. We work eight-day fortnights, which means you can look forward to a four-day weekend every second week. You will work either day or afternoon shifts, covering our operational hours of 7am to 9.30pm, across a Monday to Friday roster and you won't work public holidays. Occasionally, special operations may be scheduled at night, on weekends or public holidays. Advance notice will be provided in these circumstances.

Locations

Sheriff's Office Victoria may recruit throughout the year across multiple state-wide locations in Melbourne and regional Victoria. Currently there are sheriff's officers located in:

⦿ Bendigo  ⦿ Dandenong  ⦿ Laverton North

⦿ Melbourne CBD  ⦿ Mildura  ⦿ Pakenham

⦿ Ringwood  ⦿ Shepparton  ⦿ Tullamarine  ⦿ Wangaratta

What we do

Being a sheriff's officer is all about working closely with people to achieve the required outcome in challenging circumstances.

To be successful in the role, you will need to possess:

  • a genuine interest in people from all walks of life.
  • a strong sense of empathy and respect for others experiencing hardship.
  • resilience to bounce back from bad days and not take comments from members of the public personally.
  • self-confidence and a composure under pressure.
