The Office of Public Prosecutions (OPP) is an independent statutory authority responsible for preparing and conducting criminal prosecutions in Victoria on behalf of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Matters prosecuted by the DPP and the OPP involve serious crimes or matters that are of significance to the fair and effective operation of the Victorian criminal justice system. The OPP consists of the Solicitor for Public Prosecutions and a staff of approximately 400 providing legal and corporate support to the DPP, the Chief Crown Prosecutor and Crown Prosecutors in the exercise of their independent roles in the criminal justice system.

Solicitors County Court Appeals & Contraventions

The Office of Public Prosecutions has an exciting opportunity for two Solicitors to join our County Court Appeals & Contraventions division. We have a vacancy for 1 x ongoing position, and 1 x fixed term position until 30 June 2021.

This position is designed to attract solicitors who have experience in the criminal jurisdictions of the Magistrates' and County Courts.  It offers the opportunity for the exercise of previously acquired legal practice skills in the preparation and conduct of appeals and contravention hearings.

About the Roles:

The incumbent will be primarily responsible for the preparation of moderately complex appeals arising from convictions and sentences imposed in the Children's and Magistrates' Courts and instructing Counsel appearing in those appeals.

The successful candidate will be responsible for liaising with Court staff, Corrections Victoria, Victoria Police, defence practitioners, Crown Prosecutors, OPP solicitors, victims, social workers and other stakeholders.

As our ideal candidate you will:

  • Be passionate about helping us achieve our vision to make a positive difference to the community through the justice system;
  • Have a demonstrated ability to prepare and conduct criminal litigation of varying complexity, including the preparation and conduct of appeal proceedings, or the ability to quickly acquire the required knowledge.
  • Have thorough knowledge of criminal law and procedure, evidence and sentencing law, and experience in performing legal research on moderately complex issues;
  • Possess high level interpersonal and mentoring skills, as well as an ability to work independently and balance competing priorities.
