The role

This in-house solicitor role provides effective and efficient legal advisory services and advocacy for the Commissioner of State Revenue in matters arising from Acts administered by the State Revenue Office, including those related to stamp duty and land tax.

Key responsibilities

Reporting to a Principal Solicitor, within the Legal Services Branch, you will be responsible for:

• Managing your own litigation and advice case-load, with supportive legal supervision.
• Undertaking legal research, and interpreting and applying legislation.
• Preparing and conducting cases for litigation at VCAT and the Courts.
• Briefing and Instructing counsel at interlocutory proceedings and substantive hearings.
• Communicating directly with internal stakeholders, customers and their legal representatives.
• Providing timely legal advice to the Commissioner and his delegates.

The ideal candidate

To be successful in this role, you will have:

• Between 1-3 years' post admission experience as an Australian lawyer in the public or private sector with knowledge of/experience in litigation, court, tribunal and legislative processes.
• Been admitted as an Australian lawyer.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Sound decision making and problem solving skills.
• The skills to provide quality work in a timely manner in a busy environment characterised by competing priorities.
