Selection Criteria

Essential 

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Victorian Curriculum, as it relates to students referred to YarraMe School, including the ability to implement and evaluate intervention programs for students with complex needs. Demonstrated high level understanding of Social and Emotional Learning applications and practice.
  • Outstanding classroom teaching skills and the capacity to mentor and coach colleagues.
  • Demonstrated experience to monitor and assess student behaviour and learning data, and to use this data to develop quality functional behaviour and personalised learning plans.
  • Demonstrated experience in establishing and maintaining collaborative relationships with students, parents, colleagues and the broader school community to support student learning, agency, wellbeing and engagement.
  • Demonstrated strong commitment to ongoing professional learning to enable further development of skills, and to use these skills in developing the capacity of other teachers and the school community.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of positive behaviour interventions, and an ability to support effectively with students who have significant social, emotional and behavioural needs.
  • Demonstrated high level team teaching skills.

Role

The classroom teacher classification comprises two salary ranges- range 1 and range 2.  The primary focus of the classroom teacher is on the planning, preparation and teaching of programs to achieve specific student outcomes.  The classroom teacher engages in critical reflection and inquiry in order to improve knowledge and skills to effectively engage students and improve their learning. 

As the classroom teacher gains experience his or her contribution to the school program beyond the classroom increases. All classroom teachers may be required to undertake other duties in addition to their rostered teaching duties provided the responsibility is appropriate to the salary range, qualifications, training and experience of the teacher.


Classroom teacher Range 2
Range 2 classroom teachers play a significant role in assisting the school to improve student performance and educational outcomes determined by the school strategic plan and state-wide priorities and contributing to the development and implementation of school policies and priorities.

A critical component of this work will focus on increasing the knowledge base of staff within their school about student learning and high quality instruction to assist their school to define quality teacher practice.

Range 2 classroom teachers will be expected to:
- Have the content knowledge and pedagogical practice to meet the diverse needs of all students
- Model exemplary classroom practice and mentor/coach other teachers in the school to engage in critical reflection of their practice and to support staff to expand their capacity
- Provide expert advice about the content, processes and strategies that will shape individual and school professional learning
- Supervise and train one or more student teachers
- Assist staff to use student data to inform teaching approaches that enable targets related to improving student learning outcomes to be achieved.


Classroom teacher Range 1
The primary focus of the range 1 classroom teacher is on further developing skills and competencies to become an effective classroom practitioner with structured support and guidance from teachers at higher levels and the planning, preparation and teaching of programs to achieve specific student outcomes. These teachers teach a range of students/classes and are accountable for the effective delivery of their programs.  Range 1 classroom teachers are skilled teachers who operate under general direction within clear guidelines following established work practices and documented priorities and may have responsibility for the supervision and training of one or more student teachers.

At range 1, teachers participate in the development of school policies and programs and assist in the implementation of school priorities. 
The focus of a range 1 classroom teacher is on classroom management, subject content and teaching practice.  New entrants to the teaching profession in their initial teaching years receive structured support, mentoring and guidance from teachers at higher levels.

Under guidance, new entrants to the teaching profession will plan and teach student groups in one or more subjects and are expected to participate in induction programs and other professional learning activities that are designed to ensure the integration of curriculum, assessment and pedagogy across the school.

Teachers at range 1 are responsible for teaching their own classes and may also assist and participate in policy development, project teams and the organisation of co-curricula activities.

Responsibilities

In recognition of the importance of exemplary practice and experience in special education, the key roles of this position may include but are not limited to:

  • Demonstrating high-level expertise and knowledge in evidence-based teaching and learning interventions in the area of social and emotional learning and behaviour support
  • Demonstrated experience in team teaching and collaborative planning
  • Highly developed communication, report writing skills and demonstrated experience in using virtual learning/meeting platforms.
  • Provision of professional learning, including through developing processes and protocols for observation and feedback of teacher practice and peer collaboration
  • Delivering high quality, explicit technical advice on best-practice for referring teachers to effectively re-engage students in inclusive classrooms, so that they reach full participation.
  • Modelling effective inclusive education whole school and classroom practices and supporting teachers to seek, analyses and act on feedback on their practice.
  • Providing expert advice about the context, processes and strategies that will shape Personalised Learning and Functional Behaviour Plans
  • Playing a key role in implementing professional learning, including through coaching, and supporting schools to design and implement interventions delivered through a multi-tiered systems of support framework.

Who May Apply

Teachers currently registered or eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching and qualified to teach and/or have demonstrated experience in the curriculum area(s) specified for the position.

Qualification / Experience Requirement

An approved Special Education qualification. Five years + experience as a classroom teacher.

* A current driver's licence is essential.

* This role may involve the teacher to undertake weekly outreach visits to referring schools 

* The successful applicant may be required to work at any of our sites located at Hurstbridge, Preston or in an outreach capacity.

VIT LANTITE

To be eligible for employment, transfer or promotion in the principal or teacher class a person must have provisional or full registration from the Victorian Institute of Teaching. In addition, from 3 August 2020, to be eligible for employment in the principal class or teacher class, a person who graduated from a Victorian Initial Teacher Education program after 1 July 2016, must demonstrate that they have passed the literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education (LANTITE) requirements. This condition is satisfied where the LANTITE requirement is part of the Victorian Initial Teacher Education program completed by the person.

Vaccination Requirement

A person is not eligible for employment in the Teaching Service unless that person meets the vaccination requirements on commencement in the position.

Location Profile

YarraMe School is a Department of Education and Training school specifically catering to 'at-risk students' with significant social, emotional and behavioural challenges. YarraMe School delivers specialised and personalised therapeutic programs as a top tier of the School Wide Positive Behaviour Framework.

YarraMe School delivers a range of intake programs and outreach programs. The Junior Program caters for students in Years One to Three, and the Senior Program caters for students in Years Four to Six. Both programs provided are a short term intervention for students who are exhibiting significant behavioural difficulties in their main schools.

Referrals to these programs are accepted from DET primary schools located in the metropolitan area of the North Western Victoria Region. These programs operate from our main campus in Preston. The education program at the Hurstbridge Farm is provided within the DFFH setting. Referrals to this program are only made by DFFH.

YarraMe School Outreach programs have been developed to assist schools in developing the capacity of school staff to better understand and support the needs of students with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. YarraMe School teachers work in collaboration with referring schools in a coaching role to develop a broader range of strategies to support students in presenting with social and emotional learning needs.
