Selection Criteria

  • Primary Health Care.

Role

The role of the School Nurse is a qualified professional who is a vital team member within the student welfare area.  The School Nurse will provide appropriate high quality preventative health care to assist students in making healthy life style choices through individual health counselling, health education, assessment, support and referral.

Support and training opportunities will be provided to the School Nurse in this position.

The School Nurse is a member of the Therapy Team.

In addition the School Nurse is a member of a trans-disciplinary team involving Management, Teachers, Teacher Assistants and Specialist Areas.  The School Nurse works closely with parents, carers, other medical personnel and agencies, providing services to our students.

Attendance is not required during school vacation periods.

Range 4 is distinguished by broader management responsibility, particularly in the areas of finance, human resource and other support functions.  Range 4 is responsible for managing a range of functions under a wide range of conditions, subject to the size and complexity of school operations. 

Objectives will, generally, be clearly defined; guidelines will be broad and day-to-day direction minimal.  Management responsibility extends to ensuring appropriate support levels are maintained across the school.  Range 4 generally provides key support and timely advice to the leadership team and school council and liaises with the general school community, the Department and other government agencies and service providers.

Specialised professional roles will carry a high level of independence and accountability where suitable scope is provided to achieve objectives.

An education support class position supports the educational services being provided to students, but must not include duties of teaching as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor.  Supervision of students cannot be required except where it is an integral part of the employees position or involves supervision of students individually or in small groups, in controlled circumstances, where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher.

Responsibilities

The School Nurse functions as a sole practitioner in a school setting, providing appropriate high quality preventative health care to assist students in making healthy life style choices through individual health counselling, health education, assessment, support, referral and health promotion activities.

Governed by established Ballarat Specialist School & DET policies and procedures; develops, implements, and evaluates a planned evidence based approach to whole of school health promotion activities focusing on identified school priorities.

Uses initiative and judgment to select and apply established procedures and practices to unusual or complex nursing issues in the school environment.

Works as part of the school community, particularly the student welfare area, to effectively promote a broad social view of health.

Communicates with a range of people in the school environment, the family and other service providers, promoting knowledge of and facilitating collaborative links between students, families, the school community, relevant primary health care services and relevant community based organisations.

Maintains accurate and timely records of clinical activity for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation purposes as required.

Co-operates with managers in consultative processes that improve health and safety by using the relevant tools and systems, such as procedures, guidelines and policies.

Observes safe working practices and protect own and others’ health and safety.

Location Profile

Ballarat Specialist School caters for students aged from 3 and 18 years who have a diagnosed intellectual disability ranging from mild to profound.  Ballarat Specialist School is a dual-campus K-12 school organised around four stages of learning - Early Learning (Ages 3-5), Primary School (Ages 5-12), Middle School (Ages 12-15) and Senior School (Ages 15-18). Our Early Learning to Middle School students are accommodated on our main Gillies Street Campus. Our Senior School students are located at our 8.09 hectare FARM Campus in Norman Street. Our current enrolment is approximately 430 students.

Individual Educational Plans (IEP’s) are developed by the Student Support Group, which comprises parents and carers, outside agencies, and school staff. The IEPs are then implemented by school staff, including Classroom Teachers and Education Assistants and supported by the Integrated Service Team.
