Support Specialist, State Control Centre

  • Help keep Victorians safe during state emergencies
  • Provide executive support to SCC leadership
  • Earn $85,279 - $96,759 per year plus superannuation

Emergency Management Victoria is searching for a support specialist to support SCC leadership, projects and reports for a fixed term role through to 30 June 2022.

Victoria's State Control Centre (SCC) is the primary control centre for the management of emergencies. The SCC is the hub of a network of regional control (RCC) and incident control (ICC) centres across the state.

Having a role with SCC means you're a part of the massive task of delivering and supporting the people and services needed for a particular emergency. The critical and urgent nature of states of emergency mean that you are making an important contribution to the people of Victoria.

With more frequent, intense, and converging emergencies forecast into the future, the SCC is moving to a new model which will ensure the centre can operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year to manage a range of major emergencies and keep the community safe.

The key areas of responsibility for the SCC are:

  • assessing the current and expected future state of the emergency to support strategic decision-making
  • engaging with and providing information to key stakeholders and the State Emergency Management Team
  • implementing emergency control strategies and arrangements
  • producing and delivering information and community warnings
  • prioritising the allocation of state and specialist resources
  • providing support to state, regional, incident control and agency personnel.

  • Provide high-level customer service, including the management and delivery of executive support to the Commissioner and operational leads within the SCC.
  • Contribute to specific projects and lead the preparation of responses, briefing papers, reports and other documents, as directed.
  • Maintain a commitment to the highest standards of confidentiality and professional integrity in relation to all office management systems.
  • Actively support workplace culture and practices that achieve EMV's strategic objectives.
  • Manage relationships with key stakeholders, identify emerging issues with stakeholders to create shared solutions and lead internal and external stakeholder engagement.

We are looking for people with:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Victoria's emergency management arrangements (desirable).
  • Previous experience in the operations of government within a VPS environment (desirable).

We welcome and encourage applications from outside the public service as well. There are many transferrable skills you may have that make you great for this role. Read over the position description attached to find out more about the type of person we're looking for.

As part of the State Control Centre, you will be doing vital work to keep Victorians safe during state emergencies. You can expect to be treated with respect and appreciated for your talent and efforts. You will also enjoy the following benefits:

Regular feedback and career planning– approach your work with confidence in how you're tracking, working to a professional development plan agreed on by you and your manager.

Generous leave entitlements – provisions for many forms of leave; including personal, parental, carers, study, cultural, compassionate and sick leave.

Employee Assistance Program support – you are encouraged to use this short-term, confidential counselling service if you're experiencing emotional stress, relationship problems, conflict with others or personal issues.

Financial and retirement planning – chance to sit down with a counsellor, as well as attend superannuation consultations, to develop strategies to meet your financial goals for the future.

We welcome candidates of any gender, age, religion, sexual orientation, disability and cultural background.

Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people are strongly encouraged to apply

The Department of Justice and Community Safety is continually working towards increasing our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (Aboriginal) workforce. The Aboriginal Employment Team aims to attract, recruit and retain Aboriginal staff in a number of roles. This support includes a culturally appropriate attraction and recruitment process. Applications close 30 October 2020.

To apply for this position, provide a cover letter of no more than two pages that demonstrates how your experience and skills address the key selection criteria contained in the position description found in the top right hand corner of this page.
