About the Division

The Network Design and Integration group delivers on the transport portfolio's priorities through the development and delivery of an integrated pipeline of projects and support the Major Transport Infrastructure Program.


About the Team

The Rolling Stock Development Division falls under the Network Design and Integration Group which transforms network strategies and plans into deliverable transport solutions. It does this by delivering informed investment options through planning and delivering infrastructure and deployment of asset management processes, including property.


About the Opportunity

Reporting to theTechnical Director (NGT) the System Safety Lead is responsible for application of the technical and safety risk management process and leading the Safety Accreditation process within the NGT Project to ensure the project outcomes achieve the NFT Project's safety, operational, customer and commercial objectives.

The responsibilities of this position will include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing specialist advice to support the NGT technical and wider project team about technical risk, safety risk and safety assurance relating to all aspects of the NGT Project
  • Provide authoritative, strategic, and practical risk and safety advice and technical reports, briefs, submissions and other correspondence to assist the Technical Director to plan, manage and monitor the delivery of the NGT project activities, progress and risk, this includes conducting independent verification of safety and risk reports / assessments which identify significant safety concerns
  • Coordinating the delivery of the Safety Case, Safety Assurance Reports, Safety Accreditation, and all other safety related deliverables for the NGT project to achieve NGT objectives and leading the engagement and coordination with the contractors (both tram and maintenance facility related), Yarra Trams, ONRSR and other internal and external stakeholders


About You

As our ideal candidate, you will

  • Tertiary qualification in engineering, transport operations, safety, or risk
  • Experience and training in the fields of engineering, transport operations, safety, or risk
  • Specific qualifications and/or training in safety, risk, investigations or equivalent
  • Demonstrated experience in the procurement, design, manufacturing, testing, commissioning, acceptance, maintenance, maintenance, and operation of rolling stock would be highly desirable
  • Chartered status or accredited membership of an appropriate professional body association with some or all the job requirements will be highly regarded


Key Selection Criteria

  1. Demonstrated experience in providing high level specialist technical and safety assurance advice for large scale projects involving high reliability/safety critical systems.  Demonstrated experience in preparing and assessing the content and compliance of safety and risk documentation with legislative and industry standard requirements.
  2. Demonstrated expertise in technical risk management and demonstrated ability to provide effective facilitation of hazard/risk workshops, the preparation of risk assessment and safety assurance reports, the application of risk management tools and methodologies and demonstrated ability to develop and manage hazard logs throughout the project life cycle – with the particular emphasis on effective management of closure activities.
  3. Demonstrated expertise in the discipline of Rail Safety Accreditation, Rail Safety National Law and working with key stakeholders the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator (ONRSR) or transport operators, and applying knowledge of legislative, policy, standards and regulation related to the rail, transport industry.
  4. Detailed understanding of occupational health, safety and environmental laws and procedures in the rail industry and/or other similar industries
  5. Demonstrated ability to work flexibly in a complex and demanding environment that has competing priorities and the need to meet urgent deadlines, which may be outside of standard office hours and location.
  6. Possess commercial acumen and have a sound understanding of the commercial relationships between the parties (DoT, tram Contractor, maintenance facility Contractor and Franchisee) including understanding of where the accountabilities lie.
