Technical Assistant

  • $53,280 – $68,421 (Plus Superannuation)

Your Role

The role of the Technical Assistant Entomology and Plant Virology will provide technical support to laboratory, glasshouse and field research activities within the entomology and plant virology research programs at Horsham. This position will report directly to the Senior Research Scientist, Plant Vector Borne Diseases.

A major focus of the work is to assist with infestation and monitoring impacts of key diseases and insect pests on the horticultural and grain industry, with subsequent focus on production, quality and climate change. Central to much of this work is to assist with data collection, screening plants and insects for the presence of plant viruses, as well as insect biology and feeding behaviour.

Your Skills

  • Ability to accurately and efficiently collate and maintain experimental data.
  • Ability to maintain insect colony, experiment plants and virus culture.
  • Ability to safely work independently, sometimes in remote areas, undertaking sample collection and field assessments.
  • Ability to process samples for TBAI and PCR analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, be responsible for areas of work, communicate effectively with others, show initiative, demonstrate organisational skills and operate under minimal supervision.
