Technical Assistant

This position will fulfil an important technical role in the pulse breeding and research team within Agriculture Victoria Research (AVR), located in Horsham. We require someone to assist in field work for the National Lentil Breeding Program that is co-funded by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) and will contribute to a world class, technologically advanced breeding program.

The incumbent will support all field operations including preparation of seed for trials, sowing, detailed note taking, trial maintenance and harvesting. They will need to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team and be able to work collaboratively with a range of people, including scientists, technicians, post graduate students, and other people from within and outside AVR. They will need to be self-motivated, well organised, able to innovate and problem solve. They must have a passion for agriculture, a desire to develop a career in agricultural research and contribute to world class R & D that improves the profitability and sustainability of the Australian grains industry.

The successful applicant will report to the Senior Technical Officer (National Lentil Breeding Program) at Horsham. We are looking for someone who has a good fundamental understanding of plant and crop production. We offer flexible working. This is a part-time role working 3 days per week.

The Agriculture Victoria Research Branch

The Agriculture Victoria Research branch represents DJPR's agricultural research and development function. The Agriculture Research branch provides a discipline-based science and technology delivery function in the following areas: a) Genomics and Cellular Sciences; b) Microbial Sciences, Pests and Diseases; c) Plant Sciences; d) Plant Production Sciences; e) Animal Production Sciences; and f) Agriculture Resources Sciences.

Agriculture R&D is delivered via an ‘innovation ecosystem' that converges government, industry/agribusiness and academia/knowledge centres into clustered and collaborative networks, with a clear focus on science and technology for productivity and biosecurity outcomes. It delivers a continuity of research and development activities across DJPR's priority areas while also elevating the importance of agricultural R&D in DJPR.

The key accountabilities of the role include:

  • Provide technical support for the molecular pulse breeding program under general supervision and within a defined delivery framework.
  • Conduct routine scientific procedures in relation to field operations.
  • Plan and prioritise own work program to achieve defined targets.
  • Use judgement to solve problems in own work program.
  • Take initiative to recommend improved processes in immediate work area.
  • Draft routine reports outlining outcomes of field work.
