About Monash Health

Monash Health is Victoria’s largest public health service. We are proud to provide healthcare to one quarter of Melbourne’s population, across the entire life-span from newborn and children, to adults, the elderly, their families and carers.

About VicFAS

The Victorian Fetal Alcohol Service (VicFAS) was established in 2019 as a specialist assessment service for children based at the Monash Children’s Hospital. It undertakes multi-disciplinary diagnosis of children with pre-natal alcohol exposure and who show complex neurological, developmental, and behavioural symptoms. The service also delivers education, information and resources to communities at high risk of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), and provides clinical training in FASD diagnosis for paediatricians, psychologists, speech therapists, occupational therapists and social workers.

VicFAS is led by the Head of Developmental and Community Paediatrics and the team includes a Clinic Coordinator, Service Coordinator, and a Neuro psychologist, Speech Therapist and Occupational Therapist. The Service provides a series of 3-day diagnostic clinics in Melbourne and regional areas for children aged 3-10 years, over a 12 month period. Referrals are made through a network of paediatricians identified as FASD specialist referrers, to identify the children most likely to benefit from intensive, multi-disciplinary assessment. VicFAS provides further training and support post-diagnosis to the referring paediatrician to support early intervention and optimise care.

VicFAS focuses on early intervention to ensure that the most vulnerable children can access timely diagnosis. The clinic is supported by the Developmental Paediatrics team at Monash Children’s Hospital. VicFAS supports the development of local Models of Care to develop diagnostic pathways to build state-wide capacity in FASD diagnosis and assessment. VicFAS submits reports to government funding bodies on clinical data and activities.

Children referred for diagnostic assessment with VicFAS typically experience severe impairments in multiple areas including cognition, attention, learning, speech and language, motor skills, executive function or adaptive functioning. They often have a history of pre-natal alcohol exposure and are also likely to experience other complex psychosocial factors affecting their development and functioning.
