My journey so far

I joined DPC in September 2017, this project was initiated to address the gender gap in the Australian Honours system.  The significant under-representation of women as nominees and recipients has been an issue for the Order of Australia for many decades.

On 10 October 2018, a group of 56 influential Victorian leaders from a diverse range of industries, government and the not-for-profit sector, came together for a full day co-design workshop, to design ways to create gender equity in the Australian Honours system.

Recognition Matters was born, visit the Recognition Matters website.

Over the past two years we have seen an eight per cent increase for Victorian women receiving and Order of Australia.

We still have some work to do though!

My day-to-day work

My work involves nominating up to 200 women a year for an Order of Australia award.

I talk to people about the fabulous women we are nominating. I learn about the wonderful journeys these women have been on, and what they've achieved from their dedicated service to the Victorian community.

I am responsible for the content on the Recognition matters webpage on vic.gov.au and regularly share stories of those women receiving and Order of Australia on this website and through our social media channels.

I have a great group of stakeholders and they help promote the Recognition Matters message!

How my work contributes to the Victorian community

I help the public with the nomination process, educate and raise awareness about the Australian Honours system. My work aims to see more Victorian women recognised, nominated and awarded within the Australian Honours system.

Experiencing diversity and inclusiveness

Being part of the LGBTI community, it was so wonderful to have extra support from my branch and the wider department throughout the same sex marriage debate. We had access to working groups and support sessions. It was an intense time for the community. And I was so proud to have the support of my workplace.

I've also participated in training courses and attended informative events such as Empowering Women for the Future Summit, Cultural awareness and training around equality.

Proud of my work

I am proud of so many aspects of my work. With the increasing awareness of Recognition Matters and the growth year on year of Victorian women receiving an Order of Australia, as a community we will see equity in the Australian Honours system.
