The VGSO provides responsive legal services exclusively for the Victorian Government and public sector. Our place within government ensures we are at the centre of legal change, reform and problem-solving. We operate as a service-driven legal professional practice and strive for excellence in this competitive environment. In all aspects of our operations, we aim to role model and live by our values: Responsiveness, Integrity, Insight, Collaboration and Excellence.

Why undertake a VGSO Clerkship

Kick-start your legal career with our 3 week summer or winter Clerkship Program where you will work alongside our talented and highly motivated legal practitioners, and gain practical legal experience and insights on high profile matters impacting the Victorian Public Sector.

Explore VGSO's collegiate culture, and learn about the professional responsibilities of a government lawyer, as you develop your understanding of legal practice in government.

What experience do you gain?

Work closely with a mentor while getting involved in work that has an immense impact on the everyday lives of Victorians. You will be provided with the opportunity to attend court and client meetings, develop your practical research skills, assist in drafting complex advice, and grow your professional legal skills through in-house workshops.

As a Clerk, you will partake in a comprehensive induction program to ensure you understand the VGSO's unique business model and internal processes. A current Graduate will be assigned as your buddy to assist in navigating your 3 week Clerkship at the VGSO.

During your Clerkship you will be placed in one of our six legal branches:

  • Commercial, Property & Technology
  • Inquiries, Prosecutions & Administrative Law
  • Litigation & Dispute Resolution
  • Police Advisory
  • Public Law & Planning
  • Workplace Relations & Occupational Safety

Being development focused, you will receive regular feedback to assist you in the expansion of your skills, confidence and capabilities.
