About the role:

As an Aboriginal Complaints Support Officer, you will utilise your contemporary knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture to contribute to the development, implementation and ongoing improvements of the Victoria Police complaint handling service for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This is an extraordinary opportunity to improve outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Working within the Command, you will provide support on cultural matters likely to impact their interaction with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as victims and complainants. This role is most suitable for an experienced professional who has a passion for providing culturally safe support and improving the outcomes for others.

Your duties will include:

  • Maintain contemporary knowledge of ongoing and present-day themes and issues that impact Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people including legislation, Victoria Police policies, procedures and delivery practises.
  • Provide strategic insights to enhance the Victoria Police complain handling process for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are victims, or complainants and provide culturally safe support referrals.
  • Develop tools and products that promote, educate and strengthen understanding of the Victoria Police complaints process for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Establish and maintain positive partnerships with existing networks and key stakeholders from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and organisations.
  • Support the Professional Standards Command and Police Conduct Unit to deliver on workplace outcomes.

As the successful applicant, you will:

  • Understand the relevancy of legislation, policies and procedures to accomplish service delivery.
  • Contribute to the development of plans, strategies and team goals.
  • Build and maintain positive stakeholder partnerships for working cooperatively.
  • Present facts, logic and reason to successfully persuade and influence others.
  • Recognise the sensitivity or confidentiality of information and follows legislation and policy.
  • Be of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent or identify as an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander.

Requirements and relevant information:

  • One (1) x full-time, ongoing position available.
  • This position is located at Victoria Police Centre, 311 Spencer Street, Docklands.
  • The successful applicant will be required to undergo National Security Vetting, achieve and maintain a security classification as determined by the Department Head. To achieve this, applicants must be an Australian Citizen.
  • The successful candidate will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.
