The Canteen Assistant fulfils an important role in assisting to run the canteen efficiently, profitably, and within the guidelines of the School Council.
It is important for the Canteen Assistant to operate in a consistent, professional, courteous, efficient manner at all times. It is expected that the Canteen Assistant will provide a high level of customer service, and be competent in the provision of up to date and relevant information relating to canteen operations, and safe food handling. The Canteen Assistant must hold a Food Handling Supervisor Certificate and remain up to date with Health Regulations at all times.
It is the responsibility of the Canteen Assistant to:-
· Assist with the day-to-day operations of the canteen, under the guidance of the Canteen Manager, Principal, and Business Manager, using established routines, methods and procedures.
· Ensure that safe and appropriate practices are followed in relation to cleanliness, hygiene, Health Regulations, DET regulations, and the Healthy Eating ¿ School Food Services Policy.
· Be accountable for the counting and recording of daily takings including balancing the cash, EFTPOS and QKR takings each day
· Ensure the security of the canteen and all equipment used in canteen operations
· Adhere to occupational health and safety regulations
· Maintain current Food Safety Supervisor and Food Handling Certificate qualifications and any other relevant professional development training.
· Undertake other duties and responsibilities within the dimension of work level as requested by the Principal or Business Manager.
· Assist in the canteen each day that students are at school, or as agreed by School Council
· Promote an interesting, healthy, varied and innovative menu
· Assist with catering for selected school meetings or events if required
· Be familiar with and adhere to the ¿Food Safety Program¿ as lodged with the Benalla Rural City Public Health Coordinator.
· Undertake daily monitoring and recording as per Food Safety Program including checking and recording temperatures on all fridges and freezers daily
· Assist with shopping, ordering of goods, and preparation of purchase orders, and check stock deliveries to invoice.
· Monitor and record incoming food orders as per the Food Safety Program, and rotate stock appropriately.
· Assist with the stock take of goods at designated intervals

Benalla P-12 College is located in the Rural City of Benalla which is ideally located close to the Victorian snowfields and the major centres of Wangaratta and Shepparton. The town is surrounded by quality wineries and a variety of natural environments, with the Murray River only an hour away. Melbourne is easily reached in two hours along the Hume Freeway and the Melbourne to Wodonga railway line also runs through the city.
Benalla P-12 College was established in January 2013 as a result of the merger of all four government schools in Benalla. The College has a student population of approximately 870. We provide a vibrant teaching and stimulating learning environment that commences with Grade Prep and continues through the secondary years to VCE and VCAL.
Our College structure from 2025 will have 3 separate sites across the town:
Avon Campus (P-5)
Waller Campus (P-6)
Faithfull Campus (7-12)
Each site has an Assistant Principal and there is also a College Principal.
