About the ED Mental Health & AOD Response at Monash Health

The MMC Emergency Department is introducing a new inter professional team which brings together clinicians from mental health, alcohol and other drug (AOD) and the ED to provide specialised and integrated care to patients presenting to the ED with high acuity mental health and AOD issues, and complex psychosocial needs. This service is called the Mental Health and AOD Response (MH&AOD Hub) and is located in the emergency department. The team will provide a seven day a week, extended hours service.

About The Role

The CNC role presents a fantastic opportunity to join a new team in the ED implementing a new model of care. The Alcohol & Other Drug (AOD) Clinical Nurse Consultant position aims to enhance the quality of care for people presenting to the Clayton Emergency Department with AOD/Dual Diagnosis issues through clinical leadership, collaboration, consultation and support of ED clinicians.

The role will provide specialist AOD assessment, interventions and short term assertive outreach support to individuals who have presented to the Clayton ED and been identified as a patient with substance related disorder/s. The AOD nurse will assist in facilitating safe and timely discharge from the ED and develop referral pathways and linkages to harm reduction, AOD treatment and/or AOD intervention services, in line with best practice and harm reduction principles. The AOD CNC works in partnership and collaboration with other members of the interdisciplinary ED Response team, mental health program, AOD services, allied health and lived experience workforce.

  • Provide high level leadership, clinical advice and advocacy for patients presenting in crisis with AOD or Dual Diagnosis needs

  • Perform Emergency Department and community based AOD screening, assessments, therapeutic interventions and collaborative care planning

  • Work collaboratively and effectively with multiple stakeholders (including carers, family, multidisciplinary team and community agencies) to develop partnerships and referral pathways
