CONSULTANT PSYCHIATRIST


An exciting opportunity exists for a dynamic and enthusiastic Consultant Psychiatrist to join our Specialty Mental Health Services on an ongoing basis, working on the Transition Support Unit


Details of position:



  • Hours per week: 10.5 hours

  • Employment Status:  Permanent part-time

  • Appointment Period: Available from 13/12/2021


Austin Health's Mental Health Division incorporates a number of specialities and services across community and bed-based services, with inpatient beds located on all three campuses.  The Division provides catchment-based area mental health services, in addition to a number of regional and state-wide specialty services.


The consultant psychiatrist positions are important leadership roles within the organisation.  The Consultant Psychiatrist will be fundamental to team cohesion, a quality focused, person centred approach and working with a team of professionals to make a real difference to consumers impacted by mental health difficulties.


Transition Support Unit (TSU):



  • A purpose-built 10-bed state-wide facility for persons with Mental Illness and cognitive or learning difficulties requiring medium/long term supported residential rehabilitation

  • Provides “step-up” clinical support for clients from the community and “step-down” support from a Secure Extended Care Unit or other subacute mental health inpatient services.


The primary aims of the Austin Health TSU are to:



  • Improve mental health outcomes, behaviour management, social skills and recovery of people with complex care needs who require long-term (average 1-5 years) residential care and would benefit from a therapeutic support and recovery focused model of care but do not require an intensive clinical environment

  • Provide a progressive transitional environment for clients assisting them in re-integrating as far as possible back into the community after achieving their recovery and rehabilitation goals.

  • Promote greater awareness in this area of disability and contribute to the development of evidence-based management treatments and strategies.

To be successful for this role you must: 



  • Be a registered Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)

  • Hold a Fellowship of the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP), or equivalent

  • Have appropriate training and experience applicable to the field of Psychiatry

  • Demonstrate a commitment to high quality patient care

  • Demonstrate a commitment to working as a team member with peer medical, junior medical, nursing and other clinical staff to provide efficient, safe and quality care across the continuum

  • Demonstrate an understanding of Clinical Governance, and

  • Demonstrate a commitment to teaching, training and research.
