About the Organisation

The Magistrates' Court of Victoria (MCV) has a long history of providing justice for the people of Victoria. The Court aims to be an innovative, accessible and responsive court that provides quality services to the Victorian community.

The MCV is organised into three Divisions (Criminal Division, Civil Division and Specialist Courts Division) with a Divisional Head Magistrate for each. The Divisional Lawyers are new roles within the Court that will provide increased support to the Head of Division, Supervising Magistrates and the Judicial Registrars within the relevant Division.

About the Role

The Divisional Lawyers will provide contemporary legal and policy insights influencing the Divisional operations of the Magistrates' Court of Victoria. A critical element of the role will be building and fostering strong, trusted relationships with the Head of Division, Chambers of the Chief Magistrate, judiciary and staff.

The Divisional Lawyers will be accountable to the MCV Director, Legal Policy and work as part of a team. Against a backdrop of an issues rich, fast paced and dynamic operating context, your mandate will include a key focus on:

  • Providing research, evaluation and expert advice on proposals or submissions for changes to practices, procedures, legislation and/or policies.
  • Building and maintaining strong working relationships with the Head of Division, Chambers of the Chief Magistrate, judiciary and key stakeholders.
  • Preparing high-quality documents including reports, briefings and presentations, for a variety of audiences to inform senior decision-making.
  • Striving for innovation and continuous improvement in systems and work processes and practices to achieve operational efficiencies.

About the Candidate

The ideal candidate will be a high performing and skilled professional, experienced in legal policy research and development, corporate governance and the provision of high-level executive support.

An undergraduate and/or postgraduate law qualification is mandatory. Experience in similar role in an organisation of similar size and scope is advantageous. A Victorian Public Service background, whilst desirable, is not considered essential to success.
