Warrnambool College is a Year’s 7-12 secondary school situated within parkland in the eastern area of the city of Warrnambool. Students from the City of Warrnambool and the surrounding rural districts attend the school which has a stable student population of more than 1200 students with boys and girls in approximately equal numbers. Our staffing profile of approximately 150 members includes 3 Assistant Principals, 20 Leading Teachers, teaching and education support staff, wellbeing team members and a separate reengagement staffing complement.

Selection Criteria

  1. Demonstrated experience in the provision of support and service delivery to children, young people and families with challenging behaviours, from within a case management framework.
  2. Highly developed communication, networking and interpersonal skills including the ability to liaise effectively with a wide range of people.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of current networks for referral of children, young people and families.
  4. Knowledge of a range of interventions relevant to children, young people and families and an understanding of the education, health and community services sector and Out of Home Care systems.
  5. Demonstrated knowledge of child safety standards and how these could be applied to Department of Education and Training processes.

Role

The successful applicant is required have a minimum of an undergraduate degree in social work.

The Wellbeing Social Worker is an integral part of the College's student wellbeing team and provides a wide range of support to students, staff and families.  The student counsellor liaises with Departmental, community groups and agencies to provide support and advice to students, staff and families.

This position requires a demonstrated understanding of confidentiality, tact and counselling and communication skills.   The student counsellor must be able to relate to, and interact with a wide range of clients, service providers and Departmental staff while maintaining client confidentially with the welfare of the students as the prime focus of the position.

Responsibilities

The Wellbeing Social Worker position has a broader organisation responsibility, particularly in the areas of student wellbeing counselling. Guidelines are broad and day to day direction minimal.  For critical student management cases however, direction will need to be sought from senior management.  Responsibilities extend to ensuring appropriate support levels are maintained across the school.  Generally, the position provides key support and advice to the Principal & House Leader Teams.  This role undertakes effective liaison with the general school community, the Department and other government agencies and community service providers.

As a provider of professional services within a particular field there will be a high level of independence and accountability for the delivery of and achievement of objectives at this level.

The position is required to work cooperatively and consistently with both internal and external clients and involves close interaction with a range of staff and visitors to the college.

  • Minimum qualification is an undergraduate bachelor degree in social work, or post- graduate degree/diploma in mental health, or equivalent industry experience in counselling and mental health services
  • Provide standard professional services independently within defined organisational parameters.
  • Provide operational leadership and strategic planning with respect to professional service delivery
  • Influence management and other professional colleagues with respect to strategies
  • Provide complex professional reports requiring in-depth factual analysis, including assessments and recommendations for consideration by others.
  • Conduct training and instruction to school colleagues within the professional field
  • Provide standard clinical professional services to students within the parameters of school policy and guidelines.
  • Explain professional concepts and approaches to clients, stakeholders, colleagues and staff.
  • Facilitate individual or group programs for clients.
  • Apply sound theoretical knowledge and practical expertise.

Typical tasks :

  • Work alongside the Wellbeing Team in an effective, professional manner
  • Rotate through the triage / first aide position as required
  • Working with disengaged students
  • Mediating between teaching staff and students
  • Supports students with issues such as building self-esteem and confidence, family conflict, homelessness, drug and alcohol use, relationships, life skills, education, and employment.
  • Planning, organising and running programs to assist students in building positive skills.
  • Can work with individuals and small groups, provide advocacy and support access to food, shelter and clothing
  • Assisting teachers build relationships with students.
  • Provide Parent Support (including communication with parents/carers where relevant)
  • Keep accurate through written records of activities and client contact while maintaining security and confidentiality.
  • Provide welfare and counselling to teenagers and adults across a wide range of issues.
  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to provide the best outcomes for students and families.
  • Work with external services to provide the best care options meeting child safety standards.
  • Provide an understanding of the needs of teenagers and their families across a wide range of issues.
  • Provide an understanding of welfare agencies and support providers across a wide range of needs.
  • Ability to communicate with a wide range of people and agencies.
  • Must refer to other professional services when issues are complex or specific
  • Coordinate delivery of a range of support services across the school
  • Determine work priorities, schedule and approach within the overall school and strategic planning.
  • Communication with relevant staff and senior management when needed.
  • Liaising with senior management with respect to all critical cases of student/staff wellbeing.
  • Jointly develop well-being processes and policies to be consistently implemented by the Wellbeing Team
