Selection Criteria

SC1  Ability to carry out a physical role, with demonstrated practical knowledge and experience in gardens and grounds maintenance, internal and external building maintenance & basic pool upkeep and servicing.

SC2  Demonstrate proficiency in the use of power tools, technical equipment and associated gardening tools relating to school buildings and grounds maintenance.

SC3  To have capacity to use plant and equipment with a sound understanding and high level of commitment to safe work practices while following all OH&S procedures, work independently or part of a team, follow instructions, be self-motivated and show initiative where required.

SC4  Demonstrated ability in the use of basic office systems including Microsoft (Word, Excel and Outlook) to allow for maintenance of data and compliance documents, with good record keeping capacity.

SC5  With training and supervision initially show a knowledge and understanding of basic pool maintenance, chemical handling and storage, experience in water quality testing with usage of correct and appropriate PPE while keeping the pool and building to a high level of safety and standards.

Role

Under the direction of the Facilities Manager, the Building & Grounds Officer will work independently to maintain the general appearance of the school grounds, including garden maintenance, minor building repairs & pool water testing. The successful applicant will have the capacity and skillset to undertake minor maintenance tasks, the upkeep of internal and external buildings and grounds while working unsupervised.

This is an entry level position; previous experience is not essential, but highly regarded. This is a fixed term part-time position, working Monday ¿ Thursday and the hours of work will be 3.30pm to 5.30pm. This position has a purchase leave requirement being 30 days to be worked.  These hours are to be worked during the school holiday periods, to support school facilities projects &/or works. A leave purchase allowance will be paid fortnightly as per VGSA 2022 clause (9)(a). Additional hours may be required for this position, both in and out of school holiday periods.

Responsibilities

The core role of the Building & Grounds Officer may include but is not limited to:

- Conduct grounds check for hazards, weed poisoning and/or removal, pruning, and blowing and sweeping of paths.

- Minor internal and external repairs of buildings, sanding, painting, door repairs, wall mounting items and moving furniture.

- Keeping storage facilities clean and tidy at all times and maintaining plant and equipment.

Coordinate any trades or contractors working onsite and that all safety procedures and protocols are adhered too.

- Setting up and packing up of school-based events.

- General upkeep of the aquatic learning facility, chemical handling & treatment, water quality testing along with record keeping & maintaining plant.

- Undertake general duties as directed by the Facilities Manager, Principal or Business Manager within the requirements of ES1-2 dimensions of work as listed in the Victorian Government Schools Agreement 2022.

Location Profile

Barwon Valley is a Special Developmental School situated in Belmont for students from Foundation to Year 12. It is a purpose built facility which provides a friendly, stimulating, caring and secure environment for students with moderate to profound disabilities. We implement School Wide Positive Behaviour Support to promote positive behaviour, using our school values of TEAMWORK, RESPECT, FUN, DIGNITY and SUPPORT.
