About the role

The Drug Sciences Group consists of the Botany Unit, Chemical Drug Intelligence Unit, Clandestine Laboratory Unit, and Drug Analysis Unit.

As a Group Manager, coordinate the provision of forensic drug services to the Victoria Police and the courts of law.

Your duties will include

  • Manage and coordinate the daily and ongoing strategic operations of the Drug Sciences Group with the objective of achieving client needs and expectations through the delivery of a responsive, timely, and high-quality forensic service.
  • Participate collaboratively in departmental strategic planning and decision-making processes.
  • Respond to new and emerging issues, support activities in line with FSD's business model and implement activities within budget.
  • Provide organisational leadership that supports the Assistant Director, practices required of forensic sciences and Victoria Police values and ethics, by professionally managing highly complex, contentious, or sensitive information demonstrating high levels of negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Provide specialist advice to relevant Government Departments and agencies.
  • Participate in change management initiatives and business improvement processes to maximise efficiency and productivity of the Drug Sciences Group within the Forensic Services Department, the Courts of Law and the overall forensic science discipline.
  • Initiate problem identification and develop strategies to further investigate methods and procedures. Evaluate and provide statistical analysis as required and be considered an authoritative part of the problem-solving process.
  • Assist and make recommendations to relevant research and development projects in order to improve and enhance the methodologies of the Drug Sciences Group, and to maintain the reputation of the Forensic Services Department as a national and internationally recognised “centre of excellence”.
  • Liaise with scientific specialists and other professional personnel to assist in developing and maintaining a high level of expertise within specialised fields of the Drug Sciences Group.
  • Collaboratively develop and monitor casework performance targets, acceptance criteria and management criteria. Prioritise casework with other members of the group and take responsibility for meeting customer requirements.
  • Develop and monitor the Drug Sciences Group quality standards in accordance with accreditation requirements.
  • Manage the Drug Sciences Group's personnel and resources, modelling high level leadership attributes in the workplace through coaching, guidance and performance feedback.
  • Maintain appropriate knowledge of Victoria Police and Forensic Services Department policies, procedures, and related legislation.
  • Coordinate and or conduct scientific examinations, including those pertaining to major/sensitive cases, and attend crime scenes with associated forensic chemistry issues where appropriate.

As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • Demonstrated experience in the successful management of large-scale teams and/or resources associated with forensic science or other operations addressing customer needs, organisational strategies and timelines.
  • High level expertise in the delivery of quality business and forensic outcomes which are consistent with the strategic direction of the organisation.
  • Proven leadership skills with demonstrated, consistent sound judgement and ethical behaviour in making and influencing quality expert forensic decisions, recognising stakeholder needs and tailoring appropriate responses.
  • High level contemporary understanding of current and emerging forensic science issues and trends.
  • Demonstrated record of achievement at a senior level in the development, implementation and management of strategic departmental and organisational initiatives in a culture of continuous business improvement.
  • Proven track record of effectively managing and leading, motivating and building capabilities of practitioners.
  • Proven ability to monitor client and stakeholder satisfaction, and constructively manage stakeholder issues to ensure positive outcomes for the stakeholder and the Region/Department/Command.
  • A proven record of ethical behaviour and a demonstrated commitment to the Victoria Police Code of Ethics and Conduct, Financial Code of Practice, and the Organisational Values.

Requirements and relevant information:

  • Position will be located at 31 Forensic Drive Macleod 3085
  • Commencing salary will be at base level of salary range.
  • The successful candidate will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.
  • The successful candidate will be required to provide a DNA sample (buccal swab) for use in laboratory quality control procedures (elimination purposes only)
