About Austin Health Radiation Oncology

Opportunities exist for highly motivated students to join the Austin Health Radiation Oncology team in 2020. Austin Health offers the opportunity to complete your PCP rotation in a progressive and personable environment, fulfilling academic requirements for accreditation as a qualified RT.

Austin Health is a tertiary teaching hospital overseen by an independent Metropolitan Health Board. Austin Health operates two Radiotherapy Centres in a hub-spoke model. Our Metropolitan site is located at the Olivia Newton-John Cancer, Wellness and Research Centre (ONJ Centre). Our regional site, Ballarat Austin Radiation Oncology Centre (BAROC) is located within the Ballarat Regional Integrated Cancer Centre (BRICC).

The Radiation Oncology department at the ONJ Centre operates three Elekta Linacs, including two Versa HD Linacs with Brainlab ExacTrac and flattening filter free (FFF) functionality, as well as one Agility Linac, all with 160 leaf MLCs, Cone Beam CT, kV/MV 2D imaging, HexaPOD six degree of freedom couch tops and Active Breathing Coordinator (ABC) capabilities. Treatment planning is supported by two dedicated wide bore CTs, Siemens and GE, with GateCT (4DCT) functionality, and utilises the CMS Monaco planning system, MIM Maestro, in conjunction with CMS XiO. The Austin is proud to be at the forefront in Australia when adopting new technologies, with the implementation of Victoria’s first MR-Linac and MR-Sim, and runs sophisticated IMRT and IGRT programs, incorporating VMAT and DMLC. An electronic (paperless) environment is supported by the Elekta MOSAIQ patient management system. The ONJ Centre also provides comprehensive Stereotactic and Brachytherapy programs and Superficial Radiation Therapy services. The ONJ Centre is a comprehensive cancer centre encompassing Medical Oncology, Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute, cancer and palliative care wards and a unique Wellness Centre offering a relaxing atmosphere and a range of holistic wellness programs for all patients and their carers.

BAROC features two Varian Trilogy Linacs equipped with FFF mode, on-board imaging (OBI), Protura six degrees of freedom couch tops, Varian Real-Time Position Management and Varian VMAT. Planning comprises a Siemens

definition AS 64 CT suite and a complete Elekta planning system. Integration of oncology services within BRICC delivers Medical Oncology, clinical trials, and a Wellness Centre operating in a fully paperless, ARIA V15 CCS Oncology Information System. The BRICC is focused on improving patient services and outcomes for patients within the Grampians region with innovation, research and development highlighted by the use of Deep Inspiration Breath Hold (DIBH) technique for left side breast cancer patients, use of dynamic MLC, a SABR program, and VMAT. The newly commissioned superficial unit at the Stawell Austin Radiation Oncology Service – opened in May 2019, further demonstrates the centre’s philosophy of offering the highest quality patient care for patients in this part of Regional Victoria.

Both the ONJ Centre and BAROC provide a comprehensive service and have the capacity for expansion of cancer services in the future with four bunkers. These purpose built and state-of-the-art centres provide a patient-focussed environment and offer the incumbent numerous exciting development opportunities as we forge our wellness focused model of care.

The successful candidates will be working within a dynamic team providing numerous developments and learning opportunities ensuring a comprehensive PCP placement.
