About the role

Ambulance Victoria is currently seeking a suitably experienced senior leader for the position of Medical Director on a six-month fixed-term basis, part time (0.5 - 0.7 FTE).

A key member of the Executive and working closely with the Chief Executive, this position is responsible for driving the clinical vision in line with our strategic plan. The Medical Director leads the team responsible for ensuring that paramedic practice in AV is evidence based, and also provides specialist clinical practice advice to the Chief Executive and AV Senior Executives.    

With an ability to effectively work with the senior clinical and operations leadership team to create and oversee integrated clinical governance systems that maintain and improve the quality of AV's patient care, this position is critical to:-

  • Building key relationships within key stakeholders, including health service partners, professional colleagues and academic partners, to foster a shared ethos of research and education to deliver high-quality, evidence-based pre-hospital care
  • Contributing, as a member of the Executive, to the development and implementation of AV's strategic plan and objectives whilst providing expert and strategic advice on clinical practice trends, issues and risks
  • Identifying research and clinical practice changes, new and innovative models of care, and emerging technologies that will contribute to enhancing service operations or the delivery of clinical care to patients
  • Enabling  AV to respond to selected complex patients and major incidents
  • Positioning AV in the health and emergency service systems as experts in delivery of patient-focussed emergency/pre-hospital healthcare to the Victorian community
  • Providing open and effective leadership to build a high-performance, collaborative culture that fosters continuous improvement and professional development
  • Leading and contributing to a safe, lawful, and respectful workplace culture through the modelling of ethical and positive behaviours consistent with the AV values 

About you

Suited to highly motivated and strategic senior leader, the successful applicant will possess:

  • Current legal qualification as a medical practitioner registered in the State of Victoria
  • Appropriate specialist medical qualifications in a critical care specialty; i.e. FACEM, FCICM or FANZCA (or equivalent)
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of contemporary issues covering the delivery of ambulance services and proven ability to understand and apply highly developed business principles, clinical reasoning and leadership skills which supports the delivery of quality ambulance services to the community
  • Significant relevant experience in emergency/critical care medicine, including  experience in prehospital and retrieval medicine
  • Extensive experience in, and ability to contribute to, the delivery of high level, quality education and training; including the ability to identify clinical education needs and training or development opportunities
  • Excellent communication skills with an ability to build and maintain relationships and influence, negotiate, and generate engagement with a range of stakeholders, both internal and external.
  • A coaching, mentoring and leadership approach to motivate, encourage, and support teams across the employee lifecycle. 

Hybrid working options are available however it is essential that the successful applicant maintains a presence at our Doncaster and Blackburn business centres and across the state.
