Medical Laboratory Scientist

The WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza is one of the 5 WHO (World Health Organisation) designated Centres that is involved in human influenza virus analysis and vaccine recommendations, as well as having interests in other respiratory viruses (such as RSV and SARS-CoV-2) and has operated since 1992.



This position is for a Senior Scientist to oversee and participate in influenza virology, with a particular focus on anti-viral compounds that are both registered and under development.  This involves the oversight of routine testing of influenza viruses/isolates with anti-influenza drugs as well as developing/maintaining an active research focus on virology and anti-viral/anti-influenza drugs with existing staff and graduate/PhD students. This is a Full Time Fixed Term position, working 80 hours per fortnight, based at The Doherty Institute in Parkville, Melbourne.



Your new role:



  • Devise and perform various assays applicable to investigate anti-viral/anti-influenza drugs both in vitro and in vivo, and oversee routine anti-viral drug sensitivity assays on influenza viruses.

  • Oversee and mentor a small group of scientists and plan work programs for staff.

  • Develop a research program, complete research grant applications, and publish research findings in high impact journals as well as at local and international meetings in the areas of Virology and anti-viral/anti-influenza drugs.

  • Recruit and supervise or co-supervise BSc(Hons) and Masters/PhD students.


About you:



  • You hold a minimum University BSc and a PhD specialising in either genetics/microbiology/immunology/virology (or a similar discipline) and have at least 4 years (Grade 3) or 8 years (Grade 4) of relevant experience.

  • You have experience handing, growing, quantitating and assaying respiratory viruses especially influenza viruses as well as basic molecular skills including cloning, sequencing and preferably the use of reverse genetics techniques to create influenza viruses.

  • You are able to effectively manage and motivate a small scientific group as well as supervise and mentor postgraduate students and PhD candidates.

  • You have excellent written and verbal communication skills and are able to work effectively both independently and within a team environment.
