An exciting opportunity currently exists for an enthusiastic and highly experienced Microbiologist to join our Microbiology department.

Details of Department

The Austin Health Pathology (AHP) service is comprehensive and consistent with the needs of a university teaching hospital and the strategic directions of Austin Health. High volume tests and most complex low volume testing are performed at the Austin Hospital. Some point of care and complex testing is performed at the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital. AHP also provides microbiology services throughout parts of the Hume, Loddon Mallee and Goulburn Valley areas, wuth Microbiology laboratories in the Shepparton and Mildura AHP laboratories.

Details of position This is a permanent part-time position, which may be split between multiple successful candidates.

  • Hours per week: up to 32 hours / week available in total
  • Employment Status:  Permanent part-time
  • Appointment Period: Permanent role, commencing January 2023

The Microbiologist will be responsible for:

  • Provide comprehensive diagnostic services and clinical advice for the management of inpatient and outpatients served by Austin Pathology service, both at central and regional laboratories. The principles underpinning the quality of the service include high testing fidelity, promotion of rational use of pathology tests, and maintenance of clinically appropriate TAT.
  • Participate in Unit meetings and activities.
  • Provide an on-call service as required.
  • Provide a consultative service to other Units as required, including membership of hospital committees to advise on pertinent policy as required, and engage in clinical interactions to support the Microbiology service.
  • Supervise trainees and junior medical staff.
  • To assist the Head of Microbiology in administrative and other duties as required including the development and review of policies and procedures for the provision of services, updating as needed to reflect best practice and evidence-based medicine.
  • To assist in the evaluation of the delivery of services and in implementing appropriate quality and risk management initiatives.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to working as a team member with peer medical, junior medical, nursing and other clinical staff to provide efficient, safe and quality care across the continuum.
  • Represent the Microbiology service at internal and external meetings as required.

To be successful for this role you must: 

  • Be a registered Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • Hold a Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (FRACPA), or equivalent
  • Have appropriate training and experience applicable to the field of Microbiology
  • Demonstrate a commitment to high quality patient care
  • Demonstrate a commitment to working as a team member with peer medical, junior medical, nursing and other clinical staff to provide efficient, safe and quality care across the continuum, and
  • Demonstrate a commitment to teaching, training and research.
