The Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine is Australia’s most comprehensive forensic medical facility. We serve the Victorian community and the whole of the Victorian justice system, especially the courts.

We provide the justice system with evidence to underpin safe convictions and appropriate acquittals. Our doctors help investigate deaths reported to the Coroner, examine alleged offenders and assess, treat and support victims of crime.

The Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM) is an independent statutory authority governed by the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine Act 1985. It is part of the Justice portfolio of the Victorian Government. 

The work of the VIFM can be described as a cycle of three parts:

  • providing forensic medical & scientific services and tissue banking
  • learning from this work
  • researching and teaching.

About the role

As a Pathology Registrar, you will be responsible for:

  • providing, promoting and assisting the organisation and activities of the Forensic Pathology Division of the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine
  • participating in the development of all forensic medical services at the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine
  • maintaining commitment to personal and professional development in forensic medicine
  • performing high quality routine and specialist inspections and autopsies.

This position is within the Forensic Services Division, which includes the departments of Forensic Pathology, Forensic Sciences and Clinical Forensic Medicine.

About you

As a Pathology Registrar, you will possess:

  • proven ability to contribute strongly to a state-wide multifaceted forensic pathology service
  • demonstrated ability and knowledge of teaching and research in forensic or anatomical pathology
  • a clear understanding of the role and benefits of a high performing forensic pathology service
  • an understanding of the Criminal Justice System and the place within it of the Forensic Pathologist as both a specialist medical practitioner and an expert witness.

In addition to this above, you will be a registered medical practitioner and hold a current Victorian driver's licence.
