About the role:

This is an exciting opportunity to progress your career and obtain valuable experience working as a Lawyer, in the standalone Specialist Children's Court Prosecution unit (SCCPU) within Victoria Police.  Victoria Police's Legal Services Department is enhancing its advocacy response in an effort to meet the expansion of court networks and jurisdictions across Victoria.  In order to address repeat victimisation, recidivism and unique offending across diverse demographics, more specialist courts are opening.  Victoria Police is seeking to meet this demand with enthusiastic, skilled and dedicated advocates to prosecute a range of complex criminal and family violence related prosecution matters across multiple court jurisdictions and locations across the state.

The role is in the SCCPU at Melbourne and offers an opportunity to undertake complex legal work in the criminal division of the Children's Court and other areas as directed. The SCCPU is a specialist unit within the Prosecutions division of the Legal Services Department. This position will be based in Melbourne with the additional function of providing support, advice and ongoing training and specialised advocacy to more than 80 Police Prosecutors and Police Lawyers who hold the Youth Prosecution Portfolio holder across the whole state.

The primary responsibilities of this role will be to prosecute matters on behalf of Victoria Police in the Children's Court jurisdiction as well as other jurisdictions.  As the successful applicant, you will need to demonstrate an ability to handle busy court lists and to manage competing priorities effectively. This role offers an opportunity to tailor your skills to an array of matters that vary in complexity.

Your duties will include:

  • Appearing as an advocate, caseload management and providing legal advice/information to a range of clients in criminal prosecutions and other areas as directed.
  • Developing and maintaining collaborative relationships within Victoria Police. 
  • Working with internal and external stakeholders across agencies to ensure cooperative and proactive approaches to addressing community harm.
  • Regularly appearing in the Children's Court jurisdiction. 
  • Attending court and prosecuting criminal related matters on behalf of Victoria Police. 
  • Liaising with legal representatives and court staff. 
  • Providing support and assistance to Senior and Supervising Lawyers in the management of more complex cases and support Legal Support Officers as directed by your senior managers. 
  • Ability to work in a team and in a developing and emerging work environment.

As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • Admission to practice as an Australian Lawyer.
  • Ability to work in a team, in a developing and emerging work environment.
  • High level of resilience and emotional intelligence.
  • A current and valid Drivers' Licence is highly desirable.

Requirements and relevant information:

  • Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa.
  • The successful candidate will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.
  • As a member of the Legal Services Department you will be located, on selection, at a specific office within a Division for a particular advertised opportunity.  However given occasional legal service demand issues you may be required at times to undertake varied work within the Department.  This supports the Departments commitment to a flexible and deployable legal workforce and professional development opportunities in a range of legal domains.
