Austin Health is the major provider of tertiary health services, health professional education and research across 3 campuses in the northeast of Melbourne and state-wide. Austin Health is world-renowned for its research and specialist work in cancer, liver transplantation, spinal cord injuries, neurology, endocrinology, mental health and rehabilitation.


An exciting opportunity currently exists for an enthusiastic and highly experienced Principal Scientist - Haematology to join Austin Health Pathology.


The Principal Scientist for Haematology is a recognised discipline leader within Austin Pathology, and is responsible for the operational management of the Haematology Laboratory that includes Blood Bank, Automated Haematology, the Stem Cell Laboratory, and Immunology, and requires a broad range of relevant scientific and technical expertise in Haematology. The Principal Scientist is also responsible for operational management of Haematology and Blood Bank at the expanding network of Category B laboratories and Category B POC sites in rural health services. At the majority of these POC sites, the Austin Laboratory Haematology Service also provides a transfusion service.


The role requires a high level of interpretative, scientific, management, operational and interpersonal skills, which includes managing the Haematology department budget, and has overall scientific responsibility, in partnership with the Director Laboratory Haematology, for the department and Haematology/Blood Bank testing in Cat B and Cat B POC laboratories including ensuring compliance with NATA requirements.


The key operational, management and human resources responsibilities include roster management, approval of employee timecards in Kronos, operational reports, continuing education, staff recruitment and training.


To be successful in this role you must demonstrate/Key responsibilities will include:

  • More than 10 years’ experience as a Scientist and demonstrated experience and competency in Haematology

  • Budgetary and human resource management experience

  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to lead organisational change

  • A sound understanding of quality systems in Pathology

  • Ability to prioritise and lead in stressful and emergency situations

  • A sound knowledge of quality control and quality assurance processes

  • Thorough understanding of all the requirements for laboratories to achieve and maintain NATA accreditation

  • Significant experience in validation and implementation of haematology instrumentation and automation

  • Significant experience with the integration of laboratory information systems with instrumentation

  • Membership of relevant professional society.

  • Ability to work both independently, and in a team environment.

  • A strong work ethic.

  • Good communication skills (written and oral)
