About us

The Office of the Public Advocate (OPA) is an independent statutory agency that aims to uphold and protect the rights and interests of people with a disability in Victoria and works to eliminate abuse, neglect and exploitation.  OPA manages key programs to support its mission; guardianship and individual advocacy, provision of community advice, communications and community education, policy research and systemic advocacy and four volunteer programs - Community Visitors, Independent Third Person, Community Guardians, and Corrections Independent Support Officers.

About the role

The Principal Solicitor reports to the Deputy Public Advocate and is a member of the Leadership team. 

As a Principal Solicitor, you are responsible for:  

  • providing legal services and expert advice to the OPA, to help lead and achieve OPA's goals
  • managing and supervising OPA's Legal Unit comprising generalist lawyers (in disability), NDIS legal team and the Disability Act Officers (non-lawyers)
  • managing compliance with privacy, protected disclosures and freedom of information legislation and assist with complaints handling processes
  • contributing to the development of policy, prepare, and provide high level reports and submissions relating to a wide range of legal (including legislative reform proposals) and policy matters.

About you

As our ideal candidate, you will have:

  • extensive knowledge and experience in issues relating to disability, and the operation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme Act 2013 (Cth), Disability Act 2006.
  • proven experience in advocacy, litigation and providing evidence-based advice based on relevant legal principles
  • demonstrated experience in negotiation and tactful communication in complex situations, to lead clear strategic direction and deliver strong organisational outcomes
  • Qualification as an Australian Legal Practitioner under the Legal Profession Uniform Law.
