The Tax and Gambling Policy team have two Senior Economist opportunities available in their team, they have a 12-month fixed term contract. In this role you will be responsible leading a review into gaming taxes, it is a new unique opportunity to be a key driver on a tax review. You will work closely with stakeholders from both the private and public sectors, including the Treasurer’s office. They also have an ongoing opportunity, in this role you will be responsible for undertaking policy analysis, development and implementation, modelling, and research to develop forecasts for key state revenue lines and influence public policy outcomes. You will have the opportunity to influence public policy at the highest levels.

This role will sit within the Tax and Gambling Policy team within Revenue Group. The Revenue Group provides expert advice to Government on tax policy, gambling policy, intergovernmental financial relations and revenue forecasting.

About the role

1 X Ongoing position
In this role you will be responsible for undertaking policy analysis, development and implementation, modelling, and research to develop forecasts for key state revenue lines and influence public policy outcomes. You will have the opportunity to influence public policy at the highest levels.

In both roles your main responsibilities will be:

  • Provide authoritative, strategic and practical advice to the Treasurer, DTF executives and other stakeholders on economic, financial and public policy issues of major significance to the Victorian economy and government to inform decision making.
  • Model the economic and financial implications of policy initiatives.
  • Interpret legislation and contribute to the design and passage of state taxation legislation.
  • Undertake quantitative and qualitative research and analysis, both as independent discrete work, and in contribution to broader team projects.
  • Communicate and consult in an effective and influential manner with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to complex projects and tax reforms including government reports, reviews and budget publications utilising economic policy expertise and subject matter knowledge.

About you

You are a collaborative team member with excellent communication skills seeking a role in a fast-paced, engaging environment where you can influence policy decisions. You will also possess:

  • A sound understanding of major economic and social trends and policy directions to identify innovative solutions to complex public policy issues.
  • Demonstrated quantitative skills to analyse a broad range of information and complex datasets, including the development of modelling to identify issues and to assess the economic and financial implications of policy ideas.
  • Ability to work collaboratively or on a self-directed basis and support others to pursue common goals.
  • Clearly articulate complex issues and describe potential solutions persuasively and effectively.
  • Ability to identify, build and maintain strong networks and relationships with government and external stakeholders to build mutually beneficial partnerships.
  • Demonstrated capacity to solve complex and ambiguous problems.
