Seeking an individual with strong negotiation and relationship building capabilities to maintain effective working relationships with both internal and external delivery partners.

The Senior Native Title Project Officer provides high level support to the Principal Native Title Officer and management in the negotiation and settlement of native title claims and agreements under the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth) and Traditional Owner Settlement Act 2010 (Vic).  The successful applicant will provide oversight in the administration of procedural rights processes for future act and land use activities occurring on Crown land.

The position is part of the Traditional Owner Agreements Unit which is responsible for negotiating and implementing a range of Government commitments in the growing area of Traditional Owner settlements. The team coordinates input to native title settlement negotiations, leads initial implementation of settlements, manages the set-up of Traditional Owner Land Management Boards, supports the development of joint management plans, provides governance and policy advice to fulfil Government and Traditional Owner land management and natural resource objectives.

Specialist/Technical Expertise/Qualifications

  • Experience and knowledge in the development and delivery of policy, programs and projects; demonstrated use of these skills in Traditional Owner policy development and/or implementation.
    1. A demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture and society and ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal people.
    2. Demonstrated experience with, and understanding of, the Traditional Owner Settlement Act (Vic) 2010 and Native Title Act (Cwlth) 1993. and self-determination.
  • Tertiary qualification(s) including post-graduate qualification(s) in law and/or para-legal fields will be highly regarded. Tertiary qualifications in economics, public policy, natural resource or environmental management, business management or similar is desirable.
